hi all.
I have been looking all day and cant find the answers on here so i though i would put up a post.

my ts v6 has no power at all... it feels like something is holding it back..

i have new plugs, leads, fuel filter, gaskets from the head up, distributor cap, rotor button..

it mad a small difference with the new filter on it.. as the old one was an original mitsubishi black diamond one..

the cam timing is correct ..

could this be a result of blocked injectors, or a faulty part mabey.. i was thinking that it could be the airflow meter as im getting about 150km;s per tank..
thanks all

If you have a Check engine light it will be easy to fix.

Get your injectors cleaned, and clean all the plugs in the engine with nail polish remover and a tooth brush

Error checking procedure for the check engine light.

I stole this from another members post, many years ago....

The code can be read with a LED test light or high impedence (Min 1 megohm) analogue volt meter.

The pulses are displayed as a series of long and short pulses. To identify the the code number, note the number of long and short pulses. One long pulse followed by 4 short pulses is code 14. If more than one code exists they will be displayed in numerical order with a pause in between. If no faults are present a continuous series of short pulses will be displayed.

To Test

Connect the negative lead of the test equipment to pin 12 and the postive lead to pin 1 and turn ignition on. Read codes.

Engine ECU Codes

11 Oxygen sensor circuit
12 Air flow sensor
13 Intake air temperature sensor
14 Throttle position sensor
21 Coolant temp sensor
22 Crank angle sensor
23 No 1 cylinder TDC sensor
23 Vehicle speed sensor
25 Atmospheric pressure sensor
31 knock sensor
36 Ignition timing
41 fuel injectors

thanks for that i will check for codes tomorrow.. although the engine light does not stay on after about 3 seconds of the car running... also i forgot to mention the idle is perfect and it revs well without being under load..

would it have anything to do with the butterflies that are in the intake manifold.. just thinking that i would mabey lack power if they were not opening.. also could it be fuel pump not able to give enough fuel.. i wonder about the fuel pump because the exhaust manifold heats up really quick so i am thinking it could be running a little lean

thanks all

Possible I guess, are you getting a check engine light?

lord_davros

no check engine light... i took it for a drive after checking the butterfly solenoid was ok and it made no difference.. the car actually slows down when you put your foot down almost like its starving for fuel or flooding..

im at a total loss now as its a v6 and goes so slow and has no power..

Probably choking on back pressure - collapsed cat or muffler.

I'm with Madmax. sounds like a blocked exhaust.
Get someone to rev it as you put your hand near the exhaust pipe. You'll soon know if it's blocked.

Just another thought. Does it feel like it is taking off in 3rd gear (failsafe) ?

fuel filter?

lord_davros

just checked the exhaust and its blowing fine.. nice and strong... brand new fuel filter today.. i replaced the other new one that i got last week just in case it was a faulty one... i tried letting the fuel shoot into a jar to see and it slowly filled up.. i was under the impression that there should be alot of pressure and it should fly into the jar almost squirting out...
the compression is also good and even on all cyl's... im at a loss here.. unless the coil is not keeping up at high revs and under load.. like i said it will free rev nice but under load it has no power and slows the car down when youput your foot down half way

thanks for all the replies guys

Well I would say if it's only dribiling out then you have probably found your loss of power source.

Fuel pressure reg?

lord_davros
08-03-2009, 03:27 PM
ok so far this is what i have made new..
fuel pressure regulator
injectors
fuel pump
fuel filter
distributor cap and rotor
leads
plugs
gaskets from heads up
coil
cat convertor

im almost at a loss here. as i said it purrs at idle and revs great .. untill you put load onto it then it wont rev.. it feels like it slows down...

my only other thought are the little thing called the "power module" the computer (but its not login a fault) or even the tps?????????????????????????????????

the trans works perfectly so its not in limp mode..

this is driving me nuts.. i cant figure it out.. the bloody enging will be all new at this rate.. and its worth fixing as the interior is spotless and the boddy is almost as well..
and being that it has abs and airbags its a good investment.. assuming i can fix it...lol

Bad plugs?

Have you tried resetting the ECU by disconnecting the battery for about 1 hour. Then reconnect and gradually turn on various accessories slowly. It might reset things back to normal.

Cam Timing. Have you had the belt replaced recently? Lift the covers and see if the marks line up. Had the chain on an (old) Mitsu engine jump a tooth or two and gave this driving problem.

You say cam timing is correct but with all the replacement of parts you have done this is IMHO about the only possibility left . . . . worth double checking I recon.

pulled the covers off yesterday and all the marks line up perfectly... im starting to think that it could either be the ecu, power module, or the tps

3L auto? I might have a spare one here if your interested mate. worked fine.
TPS is an easy one, there is a way to test them in the haynes/gregorys manual's to see if they bung.
Probably chasing $60 posted for the ECU (if your keen)
Also, whats the "power module"

coolant temp sensor faulty or gap your plugs to 0.8 instead of 1.1

thanks for all the suggestions guys. I will try out the gaps, the tps and pull the codes from the ecu tomorrow if the ecu is the problem maker i just may take you up on that offer tufftr.

cheers all.

After gazing in my crystal ball I have found the problem.

You have twin turbos but one of them is on backwards . . . . . :bowrofl:

SORRY - couldn't resist - I'm all out of helpful siggestions . . . .

ERRR - stoopid question - how old/clogged is the air filter?
It's not on the list of parts you have replaced!

Put a timing light on the no 1 plug, give it a rev and see if the timing retards itself major at high revs for some reason.

Pull the ECU and look for leaking capacitors. Signal to the injectors may be dropping off at higher revs/load.

yeah tried the air filter today...
i tried to pull the codes and its very hard to read with a digital multimeter. im just going to buy a new distributor and ecu tomorrow and go from there.. at least all the items i have replaced will not be an issue once i have the problem fixed.. this is really a crazy issue hey.. after all the stuff i have made new it still has the problem...

ok guys i found what it was.. the distributor was a cog out.. i lined everything up and saw it wasnt right.. lol so its all fixed now and i have a car full of new parts.. a win win thing i guess ... at least all the common break down parts are replaced..

if anyone in sa near noarlunga needs

leads, fuel pump, tps, ecu, power transistor, injectors or a pair of shocks that just need new rubbers under the springs pm me and they are yours

nah i just bought the car and noticed on the way home it didnt have the power a v6 should have.. so after all the new parts i found it was something so simple.. lol

']Whats a Power transistor?

its next to the solenoid that actuates the runner butterflies on the v6 3.0ltr... i just thought that since i had no power i needed a new power transistor.. i really have no idea what the hell its for..lol

I'm trying to think of what the hell that is. For the life of me I cannot see it...I know where those solenoids are for the VICS though. never heard of this power transistor unit...meh....got a pic or link to it?

I've had 2 fuelpumps die ( one on a TR the other on a KR). the first one was very notable as it totally ran out off puff at 2.5k . The other had just flatspots that were totally cured with a new one ( fuel pressure test showed correct pressures). Ebay pumps are cheap.
