](*,)

I think i took it a little hard and now after some salt pan action my gearbox has shit itself.
All previous comments on the wonderful strength of these mitsubishi gearboxes has now been retracted :(

when cold, it doesnt engage the gear properly until 2000rpm when it suddenly grips and throws you forward, a flare inbetween second and third gears, and fourth slips when under load :( ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

will let you know what the outcome is when i get it back from mitsubishi..
im planning on getting it there *hopefiully* tomorrow otherwise its gotta be friday. aparently the worse that could happen is a brand new gearbox for $1800 (sob!)

any ideas what this could actually be, as the planetary gear seems ok since all of the gears are actually there - it just doesnt grip them properly! once they are engaged it seems ok except under heavy load then it slips.

Sounds like a clutch issue, is it auto or manual?

I agree, doesnt sound like a gearbox.

More like the clutch is stuffed or the clutch plates need re-aligning..

I didn't think you were driving it that hard to stuff the gearbox though, as you originally thought - It might just need a change of the gearbox fluid and maybe the belts tightened.

I'm booked in today to get a new set of tyres at lunchtime today. I think we definately have to look in the Trading Post and buy a salt-pan car (Datsun 180B or similar)

BOOYA - I don't think you should be cancelling the salt pan so soon. You've got a manual it will be fine. Each to their own, if you just want to have a high speed run - cool, if you want to do some drifting even better - just not with the auto box.

guys i dont think its any reason to stop the salt pan - although i wont be doing it :) haha it took me a full 3 - 4 hours under the car to get all the sand out of all the crossmembers and suspension / chassis bits.. then another hour or two on the outside around the trims etc..

She has gone to mitsu today so ill let you know the outcome :(
fingers crossed.
and yes i have some good video - although i didnt really take it that hard.. i did notice however that some of the gearchanges before i went there were rough and i was going to get the box serviced so perhaps it just accelerated an existing problem...

I am assuming it is a saltlake - dry of course - and there is no way i would be taking my magna on it!!

but again all for themselves - a skidpan however - thats a whole different ball game!!

no its a beach but its a big open space where the water only comes up at the tide i think...

anyway yer it took forever to get all the sand out of everything so some lessons have to be learnt the hard way i suppose.. now to find a $200 datto to go burning around it in :) hehe see if we can roll it!

Does this mean we're storing the car at your house

But everyone, its one of those things you have to experience. Theres a bit of water if you hunt for it (obviously more in winter). I'll put the photos myself and ben took on my FTP site later this evening and upload.

OK
well after a $918 repair bill my magna came back to me with a rebuilt gearbox (mitsu pait 75% of parts as a goodwill warranty) - thanks mitsu!!
BUT now occasionally the traction control light starts to flash and doesnt go away till you switch off, then back on again..

i hope this isnt the start of more problems.
it goes back on friday, and we will see what happens after that.
Im starting to think about trading my baby for a manual (eventually)!
argh!

Aparently when they re-assembled the car when re-mounting my POD filter they got some computer attachment hooked up to the pod, and under hard acceleration it was catching on the accelerator somethingorather and disconnecting the traction control computer causing the error to show up.. so all fixed !
