Hey guys,
I've got a 1999 TH Executive with which I've just tried to put some new 6x9s in the back shelf to replace the stock speakers and was dissapointed. The speaker doesnt actually sit properly in the shelf because of the boot harness/axle thing that sits right where my speaker magnet wants to be.
I thought it as strange that the original speaker was only 75mm in diameter and the new one is 125mm

in the first pic you can see how my original plan to fit a speaker over that hole was halted by those bars. It actually goes down in an angle so they're facing the back seat but it's just resting on that bar.
I figured i could easily fit it in easily with a 3cm spacer or an angled one and it would mount on just fine.
But a spacer would mean i wouldn't be using the original grills and I would have oval speakers mounted in a rectangular shaped hole in the shelf. see the second picture here.

A rectangular space wouldn't really cut it, i dont think, as the factory grill was a lot bigger than the speaker hole.

Has anyone encountered this problem before? what did you do about it?

Ciao

Wow, they must be big speakers... I fit mine no problems, basically your only option here would be to put some spacers in, OR take out the torsion springs and install some gas lifters...

Use some spacers...

Well, just letting them know, spacers aren't the ONLY option :)

ouch

is there anybody here who has successfully done this? I imagine this'd be a tough option.

Spacers would just look silly because of the hole in the shelf. I think i'll just try to mount them with some sort of spacer with the original grill covering it up.
It's mainly cos i got cheap speakers that i dont want to advertise by having them visible from the outside of the car  hence why i want those other grills on them.

It has been discussed (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63571&highlight=boot+gas+struts) however I believe nobody has done it yet as it requires quite a bit of fab work. Maybe try some MDF to try and raise it? What kind of clearance do you need to make it fit?

35mm which should be easy, it think i'll just find a decent enough looking spacer.

I guess i should just start looking for a MDF online

35mm is a huge spacer and probly wouldn't even fit under the glass let alone being able to get anything on the back screws to do them up.

Is the problem more the depth of the speaker or the diameter of the magnet, diameter of my magnet is about 95 to 100mm and only just clears the torsion springs by about 5mm.

TBH i think by far the easiest option is to get yourself another set of speakers that will fit.
