View Full Version : NZ Intake questions...
After some hefty searching, I could not find conclusive evidence that fitting the NZ spec air intake to a pre-TL Magna is a good or bad thing.
Before I shell out $150 for one of these, i was hoping someone has some real opinions or facts (dyno graph, performance times etc etc) on whether this is likely to result in an improvement to response/drivability/torque. Apparently the NZ Diamante's had a 10Kw gain over the aussie equivalent, also no evidence of this, but supposedly attributed to this style intake??
After looking at pictures, it appears that it has a mighty bend right in front of the airbox, as well as solely relying on decent airflow behind the passenger headlight.

jasonvrx did a back to back dyno and had a power loss in the change of intake

I wouldn't imagine it would work on your car.
I've got one on the TL, but there's airflow coming through the grill beside the headlights. That space doesn't exist on other models - hence no extra airflow.
I recently sold another one because I didn't feel it would work on the KJ. IMHO, don't waste your money.

Thanks alscall. Just a thought, if you could feed a pipe down to the front duct in bumper bar (where foggies normally live). You could have a mesh over it to stop foreign objects entering it, and have a good source of airflow. I wonder if there is enough space behind it?

the stock snorkel is pretty good with airflow
tho you could make the opening alittle wider
or just run a 90/100mm flexable pipe down to the bottom of your bumper with some flier wire on the end of it
its what i did and worked out fine :)
would be better if you had both of them on your car ;) (stock snorkel and piping)

Surely, for your $150 & the time you'd spend, couldn't you fabricate a CAI from the airbox to the same point?
Or are you specifically after a 'stock' look?
yeah it probably would be cheaper or similar cost to fabricate something from scratch. Certainly from a 'stock looking' point of view the NZ would be perfect and also providing a half-way point to making a better induction system.
Roberto, I look at the stock intake, and just wonder if it is restricting the engine's ability to suck in air? Sure, its a wide area, but also incredible narrow. I can barely get my fingers inside the mouth (please don't read into that last bit)

The stock inlet is fine for nearly 185Kw's @ wheels :P
Jason that is a very good point. Do you think you would have noticed that the stock intake is limiting your donkey engine's potential?
MOST IMPORTANTLY HAVE YOU REMOVED THE RESONATORS

Mine only had the one resonator on top of the inlet pipe that goes from the MAF to the TB and yes its been removed. My car has had the NZ inlet (for over 4yrs) on it up until the day at SKR.
cool, I also only have the one resonator. Spice lid mod soon.

use a welsch plug.
cool, where abouts can I get one of these welch plugs?

repco? there line 40 cents each last time i bought a couple for building an engine.. kinda last moment sunday morning thing... they are cheaper elsewhere.. but still it's not even $5 for a hand full to do an engine.. just bust out your verniers or at least a ruler and measure what dia you need

am i the only person on here to have not noticed a difference when getting rid if the resonator???
EDIT: and changing it to a spice lid btw

i got one on mine
and can tell that theres a lil extra power there (from the butt dyno)
car feels a lil more responsive too.
fuel econ seemed to improve a FRACTION as well, when driven nicely - but that doesnt happen! haha
EDIT - appears i didnt read the original post thoroughly, PRE TL.. my bad sorry!

You have a KL, I do not.

true,
but from everything i have read here and there - the intake is designed for the TL shape to be able to draw from behind the headlight

IMO is there is no tangible difference in removing the intake resonators. Besides louder intake noise, which can give the illusion of more power.
After mucking about with a DIY 'drainpipe' style CAI for a while, I eventually gave up on it and went back to the factory snorkel intake, simply because I got sick of it sucking up dirt/pebbles into my airbox. Especially at the track, where an off into the sandtraps would result in an airbox/piping full of crap.
Next time the car's on the dyno I'll do back-to-back testing with and without the snorkel, and see what the result is. But my feeling is it's only gonna be a few kw difference, even with the sprintex setup, as opposed to stock.
But if there is a significant difference (e.g more than 5kw @ the wheels), I'll probably look into making up a new intake.

Great thread.
Was thinking of an NZ but not after readfing this thread. Not worth it from what i can read and the stock one looks better too.
Thanks for the info guys.
