A local audio supplier has a pair of Alpine Type X splits marked down as i think they are old stock (SPX-177R).

I did listen to them and thought they sounded very good, alot of bass and quiet alot of volume even running straight off a HU.

What i wanted to know is how would these compare to say Focal or Hertz which seem to be recommended quiet alot on here?

they are very good but why dont you go and have a listen to focal and hertz and make up your own mind? cause if something sounds good to me wont mean that itll sound good to you

I love mine. Got them for the bargain price of $150 a couple of years ago. :)

Damn it, where the hell are you people getting such good speakers at such cheap prices

The ones i was looking at were still $450 marked down

Also i would love to have a listen to some Focal and Hertz but noone in my town has any and the closest is probly a 2hour drive.

I have no idea how much people are paying for their Focals because i cant find anyone selling them.

Anyone know where i could get some at a good price online?

I got mine second hand from the Mobile Electronics Australia forums. Some good bargains to be had.

Not sure if it's a good price, but fhrx seems to have a lot of stuff including focal and hertz.

Thanks mate, seems Focal isn't as expensive as i thought. Might go that way since everyone seems to stand by them.

What are Focals like for bass? Dont really want a sub but i'd like about as much bass as i can get from fronts and rears. They will be amped and im going to dynamat the doors and rear shelf.

Whats your budget? I've got Polyglass 165 VR (http://www.focalaustralia.com.au/polyglass.html#165vr) components in the front of my car, and their bass response ain't bad. In the rear I have a K2 Power 165 KBE Bass Ext Kit (http://www.focalaustralia.com.au/k2_power.html#165kbe) and the bass response from those is well, plentiful. The KBE's are far and away better than my old sub, but they come at a price, and they need good clean power.

Personally I'd try and stick to the K2 range if you want to go without a sub. The clarity and highs from my Polyglass components up front are fantastic, but I wouldn't be happy with the overall sound if i didn't have K2's in the back. If I was going to do it again I'd put K2 Power 165KR (http://www.focalaustralia.com.au/k2_power.html#165kr) or 165KR2 components in the front I think.

In all honesty its hard to say if one speaker is 'better' than another.

You can judge speakers on things like clarity, bass response, volume etc - but after that, what sounds good to me might sound average to you.

If you're happy with the price and performance - buy them, by all means compare them to other speakers if you can.

Its also hard to pick an off the shelf speaker without listening to them first.
