just testing the water.. and i don't really wanna hear 'just buy a 5spd auto car' or 'MANUAL FTW!'
i have a S1 KJ XI.. 4spd tippy.. what would i need for the 5spd auto conversion?
box
ecu
wiring could be different? spose i need to download the diagrams and have a look..
then there is the little stuff like dash cluster..
i assume they run the same driveshafts..
any info would be great,
cheers,
- Gearbox
- Wiring harness (Both Engine and Dash)
- Cluster
- Shifter
- ECU & BEM
Everything else will bolt up nicely, its a dash-out job on the cabin side though. IIRC after this you'll also be able to use a digital S2 blackout cluster.

AFAIK it would be more trouble than its actually worth.*
also AFAIK people that have tried have had alot of trouble.*
*Disclaimer - before i get flamed about "people that know nothing that think they know everything, i could be wrong, but that is what pops into my head.
EDIT* sorry i thought u had a standard 4spd auto, not a tippy...
comment is now void.

It's still just as big a job, the wiring harness is completely different in the cabin due to the digital clusters.

awsome..
i'm just asking, the 5spd's seem to accelerate alot better, and well it's a newer box :)
why would i need to change the shifter just out of curiosity? as i would be putting in a 5spd tippy..
spose i should just try and find a TJ II sports etc etc at the wreckers and have a poke around..

the cluster i have in there at the moment is the black out cluster and has the little LCD screen for trip/odo func.. but obviously it's got the 4spd tippy map in the middle..
spose if i'm going to all this effort i might as well do everything..

There are additional wires going into both the gear selecter and cluster iirc

ok, after having pulled my 4 speed tippy out here's what I think you'd need...
gearbox
ECU/TCU
5 speed cluster
cluster wiring back to ECU
the shifter and wiring would stay the same, the gearbox *should* wire up the same. without digging into to it, all that would change is the wiring to the cluster.
I'll have a dig through the wiring diagrams for 4 vs 5 speed autos and see what's different.

awsome!, thats what i was going to do once i get some bandwith ... sigh... :)

hmm, just had a quick look at the 4 speed vs 5 speed wiring. it looks like there's an extra wire run from the ECU (B-111A [position 127]) through the manual control switch (B-105 [13]) to the cluster (C-03 [54]).
there is no mention of a difference in the underbonnet wiring between 4 speed and 5 speed auto 'boxes.
it's possible that the ECU for the 4 speed and 5 speed are the same, but I wouldn't risk it. depends on how competent your electronics skills are, but you could test it.
I think my list of parts above would get it done.
cheers,

Don't forget the BEM, to replace the ECU you also have to pair it with the same BEM...

No you do not need to pair them up. They can be coded and the ECU holds the key code not the BEM.
With my TF (I know is an earlier model) the ECU was changed, I changed the BEM and car woudl not start, placed the key from the wreck near the coil and it goes. So now have my original bem and ecu from other car.
The job is not all that big for starters, if you like the car go for it.
Find the auctions near you, grab yourself a wreck and you are off and running.
Should be able to knock it over in a day or two, given the amount of work I went to with mine in only 3 days. You have not even a quater of the work to do.

Well going to the trouble of replacing ECU's, instead of coding you might as well just replace the BEM... Easier imo

And you did a transmission conversion last when........................?

What would changing the BEM achieve if the key code is stored in the ECU?

sorry for sounding dumb..
Mad magna -
say i found a wreck with everything i need..
for example a KJ series II
i would grab the gearbox, the ecu, the dash cluster, and the key?
and run the extra wire/s as per the diagram wook posts (cheers again for that mate)

is there any parts guys out there that might be able to tell. I would have thought you would need it as the final gear ratios would be different and be sending different info to the auto ECU as to not put it into limp mode.
Series I sports also had the 5spd tippys. bit older tho now i guess.

Also grab the engine harness, it is very easy to unplug and throw that across too. If you purchase a wreck you could also change the main harness over as is really fool proof, most plugs will only plug into one place and is not that hard
Life, ECU holds the key code so you can have as many BEM's as you want.....

yep yep, i've done heaps of conversions before, but typically older stuff.. with none of this bem 'coded' ecu's and crap lol..
