Not that this may help but had something similar to this at work today, check ALL plugs are secure. we had a L300 today where the plug was on but missing the silver clip and cause it came loose, car refused to start.
could be a problem? cant hurt to check

Not to fill your thread with crap but it cranked but wouldnt fire. once this plug was on it fired :) Dunno, could be a possibility.
Tried jump starting it? One of my battery cells died the other day and that was the issue I was having, turn the key and nothing.

i haven't fitted the alternator yet and the belt is off, would that stop it from firing??

Mmmmm dont think so. All it has is 2 power feeds and a feed that goes to the dash light as a warning.
if youve been cranking cranking cranking, hook up a jumper car, the more you crank the more heat etc you put in the starter and its cables.

youll find that once the engine is running, the alternator is used instead of the battery for electricals

Taking a guess here
But if you refit all the electricals ie alternator and associated wiring I bet you it will start and run fine
