can anyone here please tell me,

1) how can you confirm the timing chain needs replacing without looking at it

2) how much will it cost ( best estimate) for a mechanic to fix this

3) what exactly is involved with changing the tiing chain

ty in advance

hey mate, dont know for sure about a ts, but with my tj its was brtween 400 and 500 as he only did the timing belt and the other belts around it.

its essentially removing the mount, taking off the belts and replacing them... ( a fair bit more difficult and time consuming than this sounds however...)

dont know how you would tell if its done, but it should be done every 100k km's. but u may also want the water pump and etc changed...

could be up to 1k if you get it all done with a full service and etc.

to get it fixed, mine was about $1200 with manual labour.
so its best to get a full service at the same time :)

For starters, have a listen to the obvious symptoms. Is it rattling? Otherwise has the chain done more than 200,000kms (this isn't a fixed amount, but it is reasonable, took my TR 17 years to get to 200,000).

$1200 sounds about right, as unlike the V6 models, the 4-cylinder chain driven Astron engines will need to lifted out of the car to have the job done. It's otherwise a pretty intense job, so as presti said, if you're getting the engine out you may wish to take the opportunity to have a full service done (or any little modifications you may have been after).

Water pump does not have to be done at the same time as the Timing components on the 2.6. The pump is driven by a separate belt from the camshaft at the opposite end of the engine (just above the transmission).

Basically a timing chain service involves removing the engine from the car, removing the timing cover, swapping the old timing and balance shaft chains, timing and balance chain guides and the associated tensioners with new replacement components. The reverse then needs to be done, replacing the timing cover with new gaskets and dropping the engine back into the car.

Isn't for the faint of heart, that's for sure. lol
