Hi all,
Have a 2001 TJ Magna that has recently had the engine replaced withh a reco engine but has this wierd vibration all the time. The engine was balanced (full floating assembly + harmonic balancer, flexplate and tourque converter) and still does it. Is there a factoty fault with the rear engine mount on this car? any help would be greatly appreciated as this car is driving me around the bend (or not since it's still in the workshop)
Check all your engine mounts, the most common one to split is the drivers-side one above the washer bottle.

yeah that was replaced as well. Is there a difference in rubber quality of the mounts between genuine and aftermarket?

Shouldn't be no, I've ordered a poly mount for mine, much more durable and being poly, they are alot stiffer as well...

Gen vs Flea-Bay 3rd Gen (Drivers side) Engine Mounts.
I have replaced the RHS (drivers) engine mount on a TJ Exec and a TJ Sports within a period of about a year - Exec was first and got gen Mitsi spare at $240-00 then Sports got a FleaBay jobbie at approx $115-00.
Both mounts seem to be doing a good job with no discernible difference in smoothness etc. The earliest replacement has done (at most) about 15months service, so its too early to guess how gen vs after-market perform for durability, both seem to be holding up well for now.

I would say that the balance has not been done properly.
Does it vibrate when not in gear as well?

Yep sounds like a bad balance job to me.

Slight thread jack here, I recently bought a Verada wagon with 108,000km and it has what I would describe as a shake at idle in gear.
I've read the threads on engine mounts and my issue seems to be different to the usual symptoms of a failed mount. The vibration is at a low frequency, maybe around 10 hz and is felt strongly through the steering wheel, enough to make my hand feel numb if I'm stuck in traffic and holding the wheel. It tends to diminish if I select neutral and there is no harshness, clunking or vibration when the car is in motion.
Could it be the idle rpm is too low?

I also got '97 TF wagon V6 (6G72) which shakes at idle in gear only, during drive its fine and performance is not compromised at all. My RH engine mount was changed 5k before it started to shake but recently I inspected them all and they seam to be fine without any cracks. Since I am leaving with this problem for some time now I have been doing trial and error at every service, replaced few sensor and relays which I pick up from wreckers and also changed most of my intake and exhaust gaskets but it still shakes its nuts off. If any one had the some problem and got it fixed it would be good to give us some feedback. Thanks

If it's a loud noise like vibrating plastic sorta thing.. it's the Alternator belt... have to increase the tension on the tensioner pully. Easy as.
These parts are exposed on the engine. Loosen the center bolt on the tensioner pully and increase the tension by screwing in (a little.. ie 1/2 turn) the bolt 'underneath' the pully.. tighten the center bolt and start her up.
If it improves but the noise is still present... repeat.
See how that goes. Worked for me.
Edit:- I've kinda come to see this issue in a similar light to the squeeling fanbelts on falcons. :-/ The solution is alot easier than most people think however. Your engine is just fine. Maybe.
Problem is, I think most workshops dont have the 'special tool' for measuring the tension on the belt correctly and dont tighten it enough. That being said... if the belt has to be super tight then it could be a bearing on any one of the 3 or 4 parts that run off that belt. Mine had a shocking vibration for a while but I come across this solution by using the 'search' feature to it's n'th...
