OH CRAP!!! doesn't really describe my reaction to the 2 big pieces of metal i just pulled out of my auto trans!
Me and my mates took my tj up into the dandenongs on saturday and we didn't notice anying werid or sus with the trans it was shifting perfect no flaring no slipping no werid noises and no steering feed back from the diff.
I will try and post a pic of the pieces later tonight... i have read a few threads on here that a wave spring lets go and has a ball going through the trans... How worried should i be??? If and when it goes how much does the manual conversion usally cost??? doing the labor myself...

As scott said, i pulled 2 pieces of metal, about 5mm wide, 30mm long, out of my auto. It was actually November last year. I was told be the auto trans shop i would get very little change out of 2k to have the prob fixed, or about 2500 for a fully reco box. I was also told i would be lucky to get 3 - 6 months out of it if i baby it.
From what i have read, and people i have spoken to; Real world figures for a manual conversion are 3k to get someone to do all the hard stuff. This is what i plan to do - However, i am a fan of the 5spd auto, and may just source one from the wreckers when the time comes.
Either way, its had a hard  5 months and still no issues. For all i know this could have been a problem from new as it didnt look like the auto trans had been serviced before. lol
I say just drive it until it dies, then decide manual, or a cheap 2nd hand auto.

ok took the couple pieces of metal i pulled out into work today and spoke to a couple of the qualified (car) mechanics, they rang a couple of thier mates who are trans experts... and was told very common issue (already knew) in the low speed reverse clutch pack, there will be more in there and before long it will make its way past the filter and into the pump then goodbye trans. they rekon it will drive fine until the metal fragments hit the pump. No pump no trans.
So options are,
remove at home and take it into work on a weekend (doesn't matter when as ive lost my licence for 6 months at a minimum) and rebuild/ replace filter and any other damaged parts.
OR
manual conversion, buying a second hand trans rebuilding and then converting... in addition to rebuilding the auto and then selling the auto to recoupe some cost.
went to a couple of wreckers on the way home they want $880 for a gearbox.. repco want aprox $200 a piece for new drive shafts and $200 combined for master and slave cyls. on top of the 600-900 for a clutch kit plus all the extras like pedal box, sandwhich plate shifter and trans rebuild cost..
Opinions Please???
