There is a few threads that mention it but i thought id create one for gearbox removal only.

Basically, how? Remove engine or not is that needed? Ive run into a few different opinions with engine mounts etc.

What other parts need replacing? Drive shaft seals, tranny fluid etc.

Thanks in advance

easiest way is with a engine support bridge.. goes across the top of the car and supports the engine from up top when working... easier and less hassle than a jack under the engine in the way

dont need to replace drive shaft seals unless they're buggered...

i cant comment on auto removal.. ive only ever done manuals.. manual box is real easy to get out and in....

definitly do not need motor out for this job

auto's the same way as a manual just need to drain the fluid first and unbolt the torque converter
can be done with engine in or out

Talked to Jase and he said to speak to you lol.

so engine hoist holding the engine, obviously remove all the air intake, have to disconnect much else can you remember? apart from the gearbox obviously
Im looking for time now, need it done asap. looking at getting this done after work hours so im guessing its gonna be one night getting it out and one night putting it back in.

FYI or anybody interested

TJ auto 4 spd bolted up fine and all wiring is exact same. Only thing different was the oil filter on top of the TF box

did u need to drain the fluid out before you disconnected the gearbox from the engine?
if u dont wat would happen?
i need to seperate my old auto/engine as someone is buying the tranny, but i didnt drain the fluid. when i took it out of the car. i know i can drain the sump, but the converter holds most of the fluid

I drained all mine first. Havent removed the torque converter yet buts the box is alot heavier with it in.
The converter is open once removed from the engine so the possibilty lies that it could fall out and leave you with alot of oil around, becuase like you said it does hold a fair bit. for the effort i would drain the box, about 8.5 liters prob less. the converter just pull's out and has a small hole in the middle that all the oil will come out of

i tried to pull a manual away from the motor and it only came out maybe a inch, turns out they have a push clutch in them so what this means in regards to removal it to release the clip that circles the drive shaft..

i have a qu now, on the gear box is there a bracket where the linkage cables attach to before they connect to the gearbox.. there is something missing on the box when i got it even though i pulled it of the motor and the other things from the car i needed i have noticed something missing there

mate driveshaft's come out first.. although they have nothing to do with it only coming out an inch.. thats the thrust bearing holding you back there.. if you dont remove the driveshafts they will still be attached to the diff (inside the gearbox) which wont work out well for you....

one you have the driveshafts out then you have to release the thrust bearing off the pressure plate.. bit hard to type out how to do this.. really need someone to show you hey... search then net, you mite be lucky enough to find a guide with pics.... releasing the bearing is like riding a bike.. takes ages to get it right but once you no how to do it u'll be able to pop them in seconds....
