So I had to get my front tyres replaced after 6 months (25000KM) the inside of the front tyres was completly gone, steel belts showing etc... Is this just caused by bad alignment?

You have toe out.

If you have put on new tyres you are mad if you do not get an allignment

If you do get an allignment and you start to notice bad wear then you have a case against the tyre shop provided no damage is evedent

It pulls to left a fair bit, getting an alignment done some time in the next few days, just a case of having the time.

Thanks Mal.

Shouldnt the tyre shop have done a wheel alignment when they put the new tyres on, ESPECIALLY if the ones they were replacing were so badly or unevenly worn...?

they should have ( from a good workmanship side ) but sadly most shops these days wont do stuff all unless you requst it or have signed a document stating youll pay any extra fees incurred

my local beurepairs mob up here are bloody awsome, down south had nothing but issues with em but the lcoal guys where i am do it all dirt cheap5new tyres at 99.00 each and just cause i was nice to buy 5 tyres from them they informed me at th start id get a free aligment..took the missus car in 2 weeks later for 2x new fronts for rego and they done the allighment for 35.00 and again informed me before hand i should get one done would i like to do so etc etc

Also:
- Keep front tyre pressures up
- Avoid nose-to-kerb touch-parking against the kerb
- Avoid braking into corners - the additional weight transfer can make the front-outside tyre squirm more and accelerate wear of the outer edge.

Toe in was 11.x on each side, better now... I am pretty sure it used less fuel on the way down to melb just before to, seemed to get 120Km from 1/4 of a tank, normally get about 80.

Yep, scrubbing out tyres sure burns a lot of extra petrol!

Moral: When renewing front tyres, get the alignment checked! Usually though, wear on the tie rod ends and ball joints lead to a toe out condition, and the inside of the front tyres wear. But this is on a rear wheel drive car, maybe the front drive cars are opposite to this? mmmmmmm (and other thinking noises) :iough:

Ok so after the alignment it has started pulling left again, called up the tyre place and they will check it out on wednesday.

Do the rear wheels have to be aligned as well?

toe in of 11.x mm on either side??

that's almost the maximum amount of toe you can have. but toe IN wouldn't have caused wear on the inside of the tyre, it would have worn the outsides down.

and yes, you need to get the rears aligned too.

That could be it, didn't see any rear measurements. So the second gens are IRS?

THE REAR SUSPENSION ON A SECOND GEN IS NOT ADJUSTABLE

No, but if you clout a curb with a rear wheel, it can bend things and an alignment check will tell you if everything is within specs.

No,
In causes wear on the outside / \

Out causes wear on the inside \ /

Picture it Wook, the fronts are towing in (is where the measurement is taken from) thus the outside edge is what is scrubbing

Rears can not be touched in a second gen as they are a solid rear axle, Not many know but most second gens that came out of mits had crooked rear ends from the production line, a guy I know in Adelaide who does BMW etc used to do Mits and found some times up to 2mm varience on the back ends of second gens on brand new cars!!!

Get you bushes checked in the front end also, this can cause the allignment to look good one minute and then pop out the next.

Oh and to those who stated this should have been done, remember the OP did state they offered but he declined

No, he said tow in would cause the INSIDE of the tyre to wear, is an easy mistake

Bushes, what are they?

Correct, I didn't think it was that bad
