View Full Version : gen 3 motor into a gen2
anyone know if a gen 3 motor can be installed into a gen 2?
is it much work involved?
would it cost much to install? ( i have the opurtunity to get one for nothing, rear end rideoff motor good)
would i need the gen 3 auto trans, or use my gen2 one?
my motor atm has a stuffed timing chain ( 2.6 tr 4cyl) and yeah a mate had his gen3 ridden off from a rear end smash and as his insurance paid him out and he bought his back for a whopping 180.00 has offered me the engine, and whatever i want really from his car they just wearnt willing to let him rip out his sterio unless he bought the car back and its all he wanted from it i figure instead off fixing mine would it be worth doing a swap as i know he is almost anal about servicing his ride i know its in good nick

no it won't, see search button on reason (or look under each bonnet and you will see why)

it is possible...
You'd need a 3000GT/Diamante intake plenum to keep your standard air intake.
Since yours is a 4cyl you'll need to change your pass side engine mount (get it re-welded)
Umm you'll have to swap front and rear rocker covers or else you'll be filling up oil from the rear, dipstick will also be on the rear of the motor (bit of custom fabbing there)
And You'll need to run the standard 3-3.5L ECU - could be a bit of custom wiring involved...
(Why you would swap to a 3rd gen 3L is BEYOND ME, better off doing the 3L that actually drops in (3L DOHC))
Also engine mounts may not line up AT ALL????? No ones ever done it (AFAIK) So no-one knows a definate answer.
Custom power steering hoses will need to be made, as well as custom air con hoses.
If you could make it work, it would definatly have more go. then again consider..
3.5L SOHC has about what 165kw?ish? revs to 5500?? maybe 6000RPM?
3.0L DOHC also has 165kw....just less torque, but revs to 7000RPM standard
but hey what would I know :P

Simply put it will not go in
The engine mounts for all 4 mounts attach differently, are in different places, the one on the drivers side for an example which would then be on the pass side would come out through the strutt tower
With the third gen box, you would have 5 reverse gears (4 for auto) and one forward gear.
In short, even of you put the engine in the same way round as the second gen, the front and rear mounts that bolt to the engine in the second gen do not go on the third gen as the third gen has the front and rear mounts on the trans.
So there are a few reasons. If you are going to go to the trouble to go v6 conversion, make it worth while and get a DOHC

There you go.....The mounts thing I didnt think of till last.
Couldnt the SOHC 12v motor bolt up to it though?
But yeah DOHC FTW. just took another spin in boozers DOHc wagon tonight and yeah.....its awesomly cool fast:kb:
ty all, tuff the reason i was going to do it was becuase i could have got the engine and box for free thats all and before i was going to drive out and pick them all up i just wanted to know if it was worthwhile... so its either get a
3L dohc or just fix mine ( byfix i mean get rebuilt casue if the engine is out for a timing chain then whynot rebuilt:D)
anyone know what a 3Ldohc is worth and tuff from memory isnt that what u got? was ita pain to get in?
also anyone know the id number for the 3L dohc so i can start looking at pricing one pls and would it go onto my standard auto box or require a replacement box ( and before anyone slaps me and tells me to go manual i cant for medical reasons , courtisy of my doctors dobbing me into the rta
ty all

Mal, for a douche like me - can you move engine mounts? or is it not feasable/viable/safe to do so?

Anything can be done with a welder.
95 TS, keeping it auto will complicate things again.
Its a direct bolt in, no hassles at all.
If I were doing this on the cheap Id hunt down a complete Diamante Engine loom (to ECU) and get the diamante ECU aswell so its all bolt in.
I have the JDM 3.5L DOHC not the 3L
it'll bolt up to your auto, but the auto sucks that much power it'd be as fast as a manual SOHC 12v :eeek:
So up to you, either way your going to be parting with minimum $4K.

Engine mounts can move but a lot of work in this case as ALL of them have to go for a holiday
No, the trans will not bolt up as the OP has a 4 banger, is not already V6
