View Full Version : Cheap TB Upgrade.

Don't know if this information is readily available, But since I've screwing with TB's the last few day's thought I'd share what I've done and why and how it can help you.
Basically on the 3.5L DOHC it has a cruise control TB with dual linkages and stuff, I dont want cruise, Well, not yet anyway, and I dont want this massive monstrosity hanging off the side of the TB doing nothing.
Now
SOHC 12v 3L TB = 54mm
DOHC 24v 3L TB = 60mm
DOHC 24v 3.5L TB = 60mm
DOHC 24v 2L TB = 60mm
So, I have put the SOHC TB on my DOHC motor as it looks cleaner, but it's quite a bit more restrictive, and I can take off the cruise control portion on the 3.5L DOHC TB but I cannot connect the linkage for the cable to attach too.
While I was at the wreckers today I spotted a 2L DOHC Galant, very similar in many ways to the 3L DOHC.
Got the TB ($25)
So instead of forking out between $60-$100 for a 3000GT 60mm TB I paid $25 for a 2L one which is the EXACT same size. Only thing is is I had to transfer over the bottom plate (Not sure what it's called) where the ISC bolts into aswell as where your coolant lines hook into. (5 screws)
So I saved myself possibly $75 here.
It's not an upgrade for me at all but will be an upgrade to everyone else running standard 54mm TB's
You will have to transfer over the plate of your SOHC onto this galant TB as the coolant lines are on 90deg angles and you'd have to get new coolant hose etc screw that.
if you have a set of digital calipers its a very handy thing to take to the wreckers!!
Anyway hope someone on here can use that information and get themselves a larger TB for a VERY cheap price!
(Should work on 4 bangers aswell)

Have just been doing something similar with my lancer. I am chasin a SOHC 3L TB so can you please send it to me Tuffy? As they are a direct replacement for the 1.8 Lancers. But the 2.6 TB's have a different bottom plate.

Can you post a pic up of the DOHC TB you had with the cruise?

Awesome writeup..... so the one that came with your new engine has cruise? Is it a bolt on to my car? I would be interested if it would work if you wanna get rid of it

Just wondering, if I were to do this mod, basicly it would just allow more air flow at WOT?
Trotty
26-03-2009, 01:14 PM
Wouldn't the TPS get thrown out with the extra airflow at part throttle? causing leanouts?
or would the airflow meter and 02 sensor be able to correct this?

Trotty - Well, Its a direct bolt on to SOHC 3000GT's and havent heard anything bad from them yet.
Mal, I'll try, but either way ill bring it with me to the meet tonight.
86_Elite, no worries....Probably be about $35 to get one posted up to you I'll get in contact with you later about it
peter_pan - Sorry mate but this TB only came on the JDM DOHC 3.5L So I will never get rid of it. Good luck finding JUST the throttle body to this motor, as rare as rocking horse ****! I'm pretty sure it's a cruise setup, It has a 2nd TPS on it and a vacuum manifold on it
But yeah thought I'd share.
Anyone know what the 380 TB measurements are?

are you talking about a direct bolt on and drive away? i wouldve thought ud need to retune the system as it could lean out...
i was lookin alot into this recently but decided against it as i didnt wanna spend the money to retune to avoid leaning out and melting stuff, as magnatism did. he made the initial mistake - xf TB upgrade without retuning.

Yep they are 68mm, mine is bored out to 70mm but they are fly by wire.

lol its a 6mm upgrade, and Like I said 3000GT guys run them no worries on there SOHC motors.
If you need a cheap tuning tool why dont you invest in a wideband and SAFC to stop leaning out? Cheaper then a piggyback with tuning costs...
and yes, bolt on and drive away.
XF TB hey.....I'll suss that one out too;)

hmm fair enough. what exactly is a 'wideband SAFC? might look into it.
yeah the XFs had a 67 and a 74mm TB. the bloke who did it said it was great once he did it properly lol

Hi Newbie here!
Great advice and thanks as im going to upgrade my T/B soon.
Wish i measured it when i had it off for a clean lol
Can you confirm that the v6 12 v is 54mm as i was under the impression its 60mm?
Cheers

I don't have the TB with me ATM. I am positive I've measured it at 54mm and it's also been confirmed on the 3000GT international website as 54mm standard on the SOHC V6 12v aswell.
When I go wreckers next I'll measure one up and double confirm.

wideband 02 sensor and an SAFC lets you adjust your A/F ratio (Super Air Fuel Controller)
Apexi make SAFC's that I know of....3000GT owners use them as one of the very first modifications to get a good A/F going

the TB is 70mm OD, i tried for ages to find a 2.75in to 3.0in reducer for my alloy intake piping. 2.75in (~68mm) slotted on perfect. The internal diamter at the butterfly i couldnt help with. But this sunday my sr20det does to its new home and i am the proud owner of 2500 to buy a DOHC 6g.

Correct me if im wrong but aren't all the measurements on this site referencing to I.D?
good point...even if a larger T/B bolts on does it fit the intake piping!.....
uummmm...
Thanks for the info.

The same piping fits SOHC to DOHC models as they only came out with the one intake to TB
Lynel, You bought a DOHC motor :eeek:

correct, i did, as in i had. It wasnt complete, was made from scraps as far as im concerned, bits and pieces from all different cars. I couldnt tell if the sum of all the parts were there, so i talked it out with the business that sold it too me and i got my money back, and after i went through all the serial numbers and part numbers it was foudn what i brought wouldnt work together as a package (unless i did soem scavenging of my own) but the sum of all the parts was worth more to them once i labelled them correctly, heence the easy exchange of money i guess.
So this time ill be a lot more vigilant, and defeintely buy one thats already in the country, i got the other one cheap, because you buy it sight unseen, with a compression test and picture readout. they are cheap as they only have to be posted once sold, they are turned over frequently but i wont be doing that again.

Also, seems the 3.5L TB stays open without the cruise bit attached, whereas the 2.5L stays closed...

Tuffy, can you please post up a pic of the 2 plug connections on the 3L TB for me please
More so the one on the bottom... not the one on the TB which would be the ISC?

I dont have a 3L one there:P One is a 3.5L and one is a 2.5L I used to make a 3L one.
there are no plug bits on the TB itself, The TPS goes on one end of the butterfly and the ISC in all of them go in that "bottom" bit I was talking about. If you still want a 3L SOHC TB I should be able to get one tomorrow for ya.

WELL.....due to ALOT of false information floating around on the internet (not this website....) I have wasted ALOT of time.
Went to the wreckers and purchased a SOHC 12v TB. Guess what.....60mm :doubt:
So basically, I should of measured the standard TB first.
so cuzman.....you are right...
now I have 3 TB's here LOL....

Now we have to work on a T/B that fits but is bigger.
Could be a cheap up grade.
I will do measurements for bolt pattern soon but if others can help great!
Remember this has to be a bolt on upgrade with only minor mods.
Some drilling for fitment is fine as we all have a drill at home lol

I will get an XF TB soon and see what can be done with that. Although My situation is a bit different....Since I'm running a standalone ECU I don't use the ISC...as long as it can read throttle % I'm sweet.
XF TB is 80mm IF I have read correctly
There is plenty of meat inside one of these TB's. 65mm will be no worries, as this is what the initial size of it is before it scales down to 60mm @ the butterfly.
What I need to find is a 65mm butterfly and somehow bore out the inside.

Nice call....
i have just bought a unichip but not fitted yet as i want to mod some more before tuning
Why not try a VRX ralliart T/B i believe there 65 - 70 mm.....
The plug may fit etc....
good luck!
I'd give RPW a ring also and get some advice as they seem to be on the ball.

Yep my next thing is to get a 3rd gen TB and screw around with using the butterfly. I'll prob get a machining shop to bore it out though see how I go..

the XF TBs were 67mm and 74mm... i could be wrong but i dont recall 80mm ever showing up in the measurements.
the way it was done the 2.6 was a mod plate with the accel cable reversed and the IAC and TPS were soldered accordingly.
the gains were very substantial once tuned correctly, over 30% irc

Just won my unichip off ebay yeh....
Should let me play with the T/B a bit more .....only want a bit more power...no ECU wars please.
The XF T/B from memory is 67mm but may be wrong.if there is an 80mm great but how the #u#k will it line up with the plen chamber? even after grinding.(porting)
As im good with a pc i'll do a diagram of size of T/B and Plem Inc holes and bolt holes of my std v6 12v etc when weather is better.
From what i can gather these threads go around in circles as no one is willing to do all the correct measurements.
eg some measure this but not that....
Now xf aside what is the largest t/b for a magna? with out fly by wire that is. Can it be modded. etc. i believe there around 65 + mm is this right.. what model are they off..
Im off the road at the moment not the car (Dont Ask) and weather dependent will check all this including pulling the required parts of my car to mod or check.
Inlet pipe ID needs to be an issue as well so it hooks up to the AFM and T/B.
Anything is possible with time and help and not always cost.
PS i fitted a 20v 4age into a 4wd corolla ae95 easy done and i believe i was the first person in aus to do so..bragging lol
Over 10 years ago.............
Please don't flame on this just letting you know im not a dick and am willing to work out a solution.
Lets get to the bottom of this before our 2nd gens are in the wreckers lol
