Hi this is my very first post on The Australian Magna Club. My name is Senol and my first car is a 1999 TH Magna with the 3.5L V6 (manual). I find that when i want to take off fast the open diff doesn't do the car justice and one of the wheels fires up while the other barely moves. Ive done some research on the internet about LSD's for magnas but come to no significant result. So i moved onto other mitsubishi models to see if LSD's for them can be fit on magnas. The result is that apparently the LSD featured in the top of the line FTO was fitted to the top of the line Magna ralliarts. So the question is... where can i find these LSD's????? and how much? thank you all for taking the time to read this!
the link to where i found that a FTO lsd was used for the Magna is : http://www.goauto.com.au/mellor/mellor.nsf/story2/02EBA1227D76598BCA256B6D00239CC6

Hey mate. There is a few options for LSD on the market for magna. You can get a ralliart LSD or a Cusco(rubbish) or the most popular now is the qaife. I had a Cusco and broke 2 and now fitting a quaife. Doesnt matter what option you go with to get a LSD in your car you wont get much change or $2500-3000. Diff will be just short of $2k and the a new set of bearings and seal kit for the box when you fit and the bill is near $3k.. Cheapest option is to find a Rallart box second hand but that is hard as sme people have been looking for one for 4 years and no luck.
Welcome aboard.

Thank you for the quick response!
First off i bought the car for $2000 (what a deal aye?) and spending 2000 on just a diff would probably be out of the question. I thought it would be cheaper but i suppose they are rare...
Loving the Magna. Exhaust tone is incredible with the cannon and you can really feel the torque from the engine!
Thank you

Magna V6 is very torquie(how ever you spell it). Best option for you sounds like the right tyre pressure and maybe learn to get off teh mark wth as little wheel spin as possible. If ya wanna get a little serious maybe differant tyres or even suspension setup. But learing to get a magna off the mark fast with not much spin is hard work.:)

The previous owner had lowered it with king springs aswell. but the tyres arent that great all round so i might just ditch th 15's and go wrecker touring to find a good set of used 17s, that and good tyres i should havee a better handling car?
Thanks

yep, you'll be amazed at how much decent rubber (especially a little bit wider) can affect the handling and disposition of any car.
17x7 with 235/45 rubber will be a huge improvement over the 15s.
and welcome!!

well, I guess, technically... but it performs the duties as an LSD, so people just call it that.

I agree, though 235/45 is too wide for a 7" wide rim...you get pronounced sidewall flex and it's not road legal either. I went from 235/45 to 225/50 on a 7" wide rim...definantely better.
But really 7" is too narrow for a magna..if your going aftermarket rims get 7.5-8" wide rims so you can stick 225/50 or 235/45 rubber on it without compromising sidewall stiffness.

No, the quaife LSD is one type of LSD - referred to as "torque-sensing", "torsen" or "helical"
You also have clutch-pack based LSDs, viscious LSDs, various types of lockers and 'locked diffs' which are just open diffs that have been welded.
For our magnas going the Quaife 'torsen' diff is a no brainer...very strong - no one has broken one AFAIK, doesn't clunk or exhibit any other annoying traits, no maintenance required. I have had one for quite a while now and am very happy with it..works well at the track, doesn't compromise street driveability.
Or get a ralliart box if you manage to find one, which has a diff quite similar to the Quaife unit.

Such a shame 225/50 are so much more expensive :(
decent 225 wide tyres will end up with minimal wheel spin... the only problem is that the wheels are so damn heavy that i put em on that they make the car slow as hell. :\

I shall go rim hunting soon :P see if i can find a bargain at the wreckers here in Brissy! You would be surprised what you can find at a wrecker :)

sorry for the thread hack...
can one of these quaiffe(?) diffs fit on a normal 3.5 magna box? or would that be major fail?

i know im thread mining here, but i think i have an update.
went through the RPW website, and found that ontop of the Cusco LSD for $1500,
they now have the Quaife LSD for under $1600
pretty good price if you ask me. as i remember EGO telling me he had to get his imported directly from Japan.
if you manage to install this yourself. you will be laughin.
also saw another brand KAZZ, but it didnt mention magna, just had a few Mitsibishi options, with part numbers. im guessing one would fit our cars.
