Dad was here this weekend for me to do a service on his 1998 TF Altera sedan (ATF/brake pads + fluid/oil/spark plugs/coolant and air filter).

He has a hole in his exhaust pipe immediately behind the catalytic converter, in under a welded on heat shield.

What's the best strategy for repair? Cat back stock replacement? Does anyone know what Mitsubuishi charges for that? Or could an exhaust shop remove the damaged pipe and weld in a new piece for less? The exhaust seems to be in OK condition apart from the hole.

It's Sunday evening so I can't call anyone now (I will tomorrow). In the meantime I'm interested in your collective wisdom :)

After market middle section should be about 170 fitted

The factory one, which is to be honest a much better set up, about $250 plus fitting.

To fit, only 2 nuts, 3 bolts and a few hangers, is a very easy job, make sure is all cold and use some RP7 or similar on the bolts

If any exhaust shop charges you more than $60 to cut out the pipe from the cat to the first resonator and weld a new piece in then you should just call the next place. Unless the whole system if rooted i wouldn't bother replacing the whole thing until needed. Either way you should take the car down to your nearest exhaust shop to get it up on the hoist and get a professional opinion on the rest of the system.

Thanks guys,

Dad's back in down on the south coast now so he'll have an ask around to see who does exhaust repairs.
