G'day,
I have a 5 speed auto AWD that I have noticed a little metallic sounding "clunk" coming from the transmission. This occurs when I take my foot sharply of the accelerator. My speed is low, i.e I have turned into a street, normal amount of accelerator get up to about 40km/h take foot of accelerator (transmission is still in second) and then clunk, transmission is in 5th. If I gently ease off the accelerator then no "clunking"???
Last service was 30000km ago (will be done again in the next 5000kms with big service), fluid is still a lovely reddish and hot level is good. Is this a normal sound???? Transmission is still smooth no problem changing gears otherwise.

Thanks in advance

Last time I had this was on my KS and it was the diff which eventually destroyed the auto box

Not want I wanted to hear......:eek2: It seems to be when it goes from 2nd or 3rd straight to 5th. If I stay gently on the accelerator then no clunk. Would it be the centre diff or the front diff? And what would be my chances of Mitsubishi covering it under the 5 year warranty? (runs out in October next year).

Sounds like front diff to me. Take it to Mitsubishi - I'd say your chances are pretty good.

I'd get it fixed ASAP, although the warranty on the drivetrain should be 10 years from memory correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks Guys, being the second owner of this car, shouldn't void the 5 year / 10 year warranty? Will speak to them tomorrow..... was just there the other day too....:eek2:

Thanks guys, just been to the trusted transmission place around the corner, (Mitsubishi is a little far away and busy today) they found the fluid to be on the low side of normal, (half way between full and empty) still ok but topped up. No signs of a leak. Then they looked at the rear engine mount has a crack bigger then the grand canyon in it. So it will be getting replaced ASAP. Hopefully this will solve the issue (engine mount is about $75 and a hours labour) Will post a update next week after it is done. Car will sit in garage till then.

Yes hopefully!!! Kitchen renovation starts next week (finally), and wife has given up work with "bun in the oven" :woot: , so fingers crossed this will fix it. Will post up in next week after "repair" to see if it does!!

UPDATE:
Got car back yesterday, with new engine mount and fluid topped up. No more "clunking" idle is a lot smoother, along with the gear changes. They talked to the computer and it was all happy, they drained a little fluid, no metal particles to see. Got the old engine mount and there is a crack in it, as well as the rubber being softer compared to the new one. No more rocking engine. Hopefully all good!!!

Interesting! I get a clunk when i put the foot down moderately from speeds of < 5 kmh, in my AWD. It goes through the gears ok with normal driving, but slips going up steep carpark ramps at low speed. The fluid was changed by mitsubishi less than 15000 km ago (probably 10000 km). I thought it might be a driveline problem, but it has pretty much always done it. Its probably worse now. Is this normal?
Got another odd problem too. This January, I was driving back from SA to Sydney, and my mate taging behind me noticed oil burning smells from me on steep climbs (going from Bright up to Hotham Heights). I've done 135000 now, could it be the valve stem seals going? If there's a problem with the gearbox, and the engine's burning oil, might be time to move on before any expensive repairs pop up. I like the car though, it been over half the country since I bought it 4 years ago! Anyone got any ideas on what to check first?

Check the transmission fluid when hot. I have had mine serviced at mitsubishi and in the past but I can't recall them checking the fluid levels when hot. Don't know of a burning oil smell losing any oil in the engine? Perhaps check the engine oil level every second week and see if it drops?

Hey mate,

Burning oil smell is most likely the rocker covers leaking oil onto the rear manifold or onto the flex pipe and it's burning. 135,000kms on your engine, have you had the rocker covers replaced? When your timing belt was done, was the rear cam and crank seals done? They can also leak oil.

Get your head under the bonnet, check the front and rear rocker covers - if you see oil, get a can of degreaser and tidy it all up, drive the car as normal for a couple days, then recheck where the leak is coming from.

I had an oil leak on my TL coming from the rear rocker cover after the rocker covers were replaced a couple weeks ago by my mechanic. It would just seep a tiny amount of oil onto the rear manifold and flex pipe, and when it all gets nice and hot, burnt oil smell. Took the car back to them and they found a small spot on the rear rocker where it hadn't sealed 100%, they nipped it up all free of charge (even washed the car for me for free too) and now no more leaks.

Cheers guys, will do! I've been neglecting the car a fair bit lately, had to think when I last checked the oil even, which is unlike me. Had a very bad experience with mitsubishi dealer servicing. It was fine in Adelaide, but since I've been in Sydney, its been all bad. I lost a bolt on the idler arm, after two services, a certain dealer told me nothing was wrong. It was when I failed the roadworthy that it was found to be missing! They missed other stuff too, relied on me being to busy with work to tear them a new hole (that they deserved!). I always check the trans fluid hot, so I don't think thats a problem, but I've not looked in a while. Thanks again!
