View Full Version : Cleaning Inside of Fuel Tank

I'm planning a Fuel system cleanout and wondering if anyone has cleaned/drained their fuel tank before. I've been lead to believe that I should drain out the tank (get rid of chunks) and chuck in a tank cleaning additive. Any suggestions?
Also planning a Fuel Filter change, Injector change, fuel rail cleanout, manifold cleanout, Throttle body overhaul, air filter change and inlet valve clean.

From memory, there's a drain plug on the bottom. Then maybe take out the bottom rear seat cushion, and the fuel pump is under the little plate in the middle with a few screws in it (I think, it was a while since I looked, and it was more of a "oh thats interesting" and put the cover back on). Should be able to give it a bit of a flush/clean from there. If I'm wrong, which I could well be, someone feel free to tell me I'm an idiot :D.
dont know about anyone else but after having all the troubles with this 2nd gen i just bought i decided to actually drain and drop the tank and took it to a place in town that opened it up and gave it a proper clean, and resealed it.
only cost me a carton of vb gold :D

If you can get in through the fuel pump hole theres a good way to get the tank spotless.
If it has a drain plug you can do it in car, if not take her out.
I did this with the falcon.
You pour in about a litre or so of metho into the empty tank and swish the **** out of it.
All the goo and crap just dissolve.
I tried all sorts of stuff with the falcon and nothing worked, I hit her with metho and off came the crap.
I shoved me whole arm in the fuel pump hole and gave her a good going over.
It was astonishing how much gunk came out.
Looked as sweet as when I finished.
I even took off the fuel filter and used my degreaser gun to run metho through the fuel lines.
Did a good job on the fuel rail too. :woot:

Start using E10 and you will soon get the crap out of your tank. Trouble is it finishes up in the fuel filter.:eek2:

Where on earth do you get that from???
Dont use E10 in a Magna FFS
There have been runs done by various people which has shown that you will use as much fuel in most cars cost wise as running premium. Not only that the car will lack power and run like a pig
I know some here use E10 but it is not a good fuel to use. Our cars are simply not designed to use it.

+ 1 TR ran like a turtle with E10 in it, idled like a pig. do not want
Just throwing this out there - TF, runs fine on BP E10.....but on any other E10 it runs like garbage.
That said I still try and stay away from it.

E10 ran fine in my car, no noticeable change.

I would not bother cleaning the tank, unless you are sure you had a really bad batch of fuel contamination in a particular time. Otherwise, that is what the fuel filter is there for. I have had 20 year old cars and never had to clean the tanks, not even cleaner additives. its a paranoia.

Just tip a litre of metho in the tank that will desolve any water in the tank.
pulling the tank out to clean it? wasting your time unless it is full oh ******.
As some else has said have had old cars & never removed the tank.
There is a machine that will clean your fuel rails & fuel lines, injectors & the back of the valves at the same time very cost effective.
BP claim if you use there bp ultimate if will keep your intake valves, injectors & rails clean.
Fuel filters should be changed every 20,000km (fuel filters for magnas are cheap)
Throttle body clean use carby clean.
Air filter depend on the conditions you drive in.
As for using E10 fuel
I have two magnas (TE & TF)use E10 in both no problems at all.
E10 has a higher octane than regular unleaded. but it does not have the guts of regular & premium unleaded.
So less power &fuel econemy
But that aside i know people that use E10 and get better fuel econemy.
The only thing with E10 it that it atracts moisture so it would not hurt to drop a litre of meth in your tank about once a month.

Adding metho will do the same thing as running E10. Both have alcohol in them.
I run E10 most off the time and there is no difference unless someone can provide evidence.
There is no drain on the fuel tank. You could take off the fuel line and pump the fuel out using the in-tank pump.
I had to change my tank after it got damaged and i had roughly 50 litres of fuel in it. I had nowhere to store the fuel so i couldnt pump it out. It was a bitch of a job with a heavy tank, probably not that hard if it was empty but not worth it unless your tank has been contaminated.

I am in a trade that uses Metho and I can tell you that according to the contents label on the Metho, it contain 95% Ethanol and 5% Methanol. The Methonol is only there to stop people drinking it:eek2:

This bottle doesnt mention the 5% Methonol

And as they are going to stop production of regular unleaded shortly, a lot more people will be using it.
Ethanol attacks rubber components, so pre-efi vehicles cant use it . It is also corrosive to metals such as brass .Nearly all pre-efi cars use brass needle valves and rubber pump diaphrams and fuel lines.
I have read that if you run your older efi cars on e10 you should use 10 micron fuel filters. All of the old varnish and gunk in the tank will be disolved by the etanol and the fuel filter is the first line of defence. Even though everything seems fine, it is because your filter is doing its job. But you should replace it regularly when you first change over to E10.

20000 for fuel filter.... where you refuelling from a farm? 80000-100000km for most urban vehicles 10000-20000km for diesels and carbies
ive used carbie cleaner to desugar tanks before...works real good in breaking down the sludge and varnish
but unless youve picked up bad fuel or had a pump fail i'd not worry about the tank
just use vortex 95 or any of the 98 ron fuels they all have extra detergents in them
