View Full Version : Engine hesitates when cold (V6 EFI)

hi there

i have a KR verada, and for the first few takeoffs when the engine is cold, when i press the accelerator the revs drop right down and it can take up to 10 seconds for the engine to "kick in". my brother calls it turbo lag....

(on a few occasions, the engine has stalled because the revs dropped so much)

it's just a bit annoying, like it means i have to do a few laps around a car park before turning out across a busy road..

what do you think could be causing the problem? i think the transmission is ok, because it happens in reverse as well as drive.

i recently changed the spark plugs because they hadn't been done for about 100 000 km, and put some injector cleaner in, but the problem is still there. im not looking to keep it forever, so don't want to spend heaps of money

thanks!

When starting it first thing, let it idle for 5mins and see how it goes. Then drive it and see if the problems still there

Could be a few issues

First of all bottle injector cleaner is useless, if the injectors are blocked you need to get them properly cleaned

Look also at leads, cap, button, timing etc as these can all lead to these things

Failing those items then is time to get fuel pressure tested and flow as well.

Sounds like you need a good service.

Std plugs 20,000 platinum 80-100,000 k,s

The 3 ltr 12 motor is very fussy when it comes to servicing....

First replace the plugs, air filter, fuel filter if not done for a while.
Check spark leads and rotor cap.

Also depending on age and k's replace the idle up solenoid. About $90 of eBay.
This is a common problem.

Also if your handy clean the T/B.....easy done and how to do threads are on the forum do a search.

It's just cold, let it warm up for a minute or two first. Failing that then you can try what the guys suggested..

hi there, thanks for your replies! even if i let it idle for a few minutes, it still sometimes happens...

it's a 1991 model, 190 000km. so it's probably just a bit old and i'll just continue to live with it

the stuff i've done to it in the last 10 000km:

fuel filter
spark plugs
injector cleaner
changed oil, oil filter and air filter

the previous owner got the car regularly serviced, so the engine probably isn't in bad condition.

anyway, a couple of other questions as well:

timing belt hasn't been done for about 100 000km, on a scale of 1 to 10 how important is that? cos it would cost $500-$1000, which is almost what the car's worth...

looking at the guide for cleaning the throttle body, it looks pretty in depth... is it possible to clean it out just by pulling off the air intake pipe and leaving the throttle body attached?

also, how do you test spark plug leads?

thanks!

i would get the timing belt changed asap
even tho people have left it for awhile there ment to be changed every 100,000k's
im sure you want it to snap or something, cause then that means bye bye engine

ISC has nothing to do with hesitation.

Mate, clearly you need to read my thread, you have NOT cleaned your injectors, if these are blocked a crap bottle in the tank will NOT clean them and the symptom will be exactly what you are stating.

I had a magna that hesitated for 3-5 seconds after starting, figured it was just borderline stalling, ISC fixed it. That being said it was an astron.

But the OP stated the issue is when he is trying to drive off, is lacking power under load

HiJack: But what do you recommend to clean the injectors? I have rung around to get mine done (First time in 300 000ks +) but everywhere says the just push a concentrated cleaner through the fuel system. I don't understand how you can be sure they will be clean. You would have to take them out to see the spray pattern. Hope I make sence, just woke up after having three hours sleep after 16 hours at work

is cleaning the injectors something you can do yourself, or how much would you have to fork out for a mechanic to do it?

cheers :)

The only 2 proper ways is the onboard cleaner that a mechanic will use to clean your injectors with a special tin of solution, the best way you can not go past ultrasonic though

Again, bottle in the tank does SFA

okay then, thanks for all your help everyone!

yeah i might not bother -- from searching around the forums it looks like it could be a few hundred. i'm saving for a better car anyway, so there's not much point getting stuff fixed on the old verada

the fuel economy's not too bad as is (9-10L/100km), and the car runs not too badly when it's warm

ultrasonic should be 25-30$ per injector. When i did mine on the SOHC i got an extra 50k's per tank also, had never been changed.

If they pull the inlet manifold of good time to pull the distributor out and check/clean rotor and connectors internal. Especially given your above statement of good fuel economy.
