Treated like S..it by previous owner I suspect. Bog standard and only 80K on clock, clutch starting to slip, handbrake shoes worn out, will do timeing belt at same time, engine in very good condition though, good compression no oil use and no rattles. Have been replacing some trim bits with NOS previous owner smoker still looking for some Ralliart Seat fabric to fix cigarette burn in passenger seat. Will want gear set checked before re-assemble but suspect with shot peen and new syncros will outlast rest of car when done. Does anyone know why Clutch Kits are so dear for Gen 3 Magnas?

What prices have you been quoted? You can pick up an Exedy organic heavy duty clutch kit for around $700 last time i checked from a place in Moorabbin.

As Gremlin said, have you put some decent oil in the box first and drained all the old crap out? Also, as Mohit has said, Exedy HD is the go for 3rd gens. $700 from megatron last I checked.

WIll be interested to see how this progresses. I suspect I may be up for a gearbox rebuild eventually as well, since 3rd gear syncro seems very worn (have to baby the 2nd-3rd shift at high rpms or it crunches).
Seeing as how I have a LSD in my box I would probably be looking at a rebuild as opposed to throwing in another box from a wrecker.

Motor Oil gets changed every 5,000 and the Gearbox Oil was changed for the right blend, full synthetic (lots of metal on the sump plug magnet) very smooth for a while now clutch is slipping as well. Just spoke to RPW in WA (thanks to Skype) they suggest it might just be a worn clutch and the box will probably be OK, they never heard of problems with these 5 speeds, they also said worn clutch usually presents as if third gear syncro is worn (this happen in mine). Will buy good clutch Kit will contact Megatron on Monday. Oh as for seat fabric the guy has posted it as available and disappeared.

Then the synchro is rooted. Unfortunately it's a very common problem with 3rd gens. My old Ralliart was the same.

You could try what I did many years ago, it might work.
When I bought my old TE V6 manual in 1999 with 23,xxxk on the clock it was in mint condition, except that the 1st to 2nd change was shite. Very graunchy & crunchy unless I really babied it or double declutched it. Took it back to the dealer twice under dealer warranty, both times they said 'nothing wrong with the synchros or the clutch', and both times after I really pestered them they grudgingly agreed to change the MTF.
Made no difference at all.
Spoke to a mechanic mate and he reckoned I should try lower viscosity fluid with some Nulon G70 additive. He recommended I use ATF instead of MTF. So I gave it a burl, can't remember now what ATF I used. Something off the shelf at Repco I think, maybe Castrol. Genuine Mitsu ATF is as good as any & relatively cheap, so it should be OK.
Anyway, it was a big improvement. Still not a totally smooth 1st to 2nd change, but a lot better. Lasted me to 206,xxxk with no problems at all, when I sold the car.
If you're already looking at a gearbox rebuild you have nothing to lose by giving this a try.

Im using a fully synthetic and thiner nulon oil in mine now on my mechanics advice, really helped free up the shifts.
I suspect it might be wearing the bits a bit harder now though, a few things have gotten a bit rougher.

Put Redline MT90 in mine, replacing the Nulon fully synthetic that was in it before - much better after that, although I don't think they're exactly renowned for a great gear change.

PM "GoTRICE" he had his TS V6 manual rebuilt and my god, it's the smoothest gearbox I've ever driven. It was just bliss. He got a very good price on it all aswell. Place was in VIC and I can tell you now that's where I'll be heading if I need GB work done.
