considering that Crane, CNC or anyone else is not doing aftermarket cams for magnas, and what is available is expensive compared to other cars, how about vernier cam gears on a magna to get a bit more out of the cams? how effective would it be? more overlap or advance only without any extra lift? just wondering how good these are or would be for magna- (my timing belt coming up next svc so i might do them then if its worthwhile)

for a start, im dead sure youd' need some more work done then just doing your cam gears.
oh, and id be inclined to run some kind of aftermarket/piggyback ecu to make the nessary adjustmetns.
spend on bolt on mods first.
possibily better gains to be found initally.

most cam gears work on advancing the timing on the engine, letting the inlet open more or let the exhasut open more!
lot of real use on a stock standard car! but turbo-essential-most of the refer to it as 272 deg gears as this is the most efficient setup on most cars!
advancing the inlet cam will send more air in the cylinder, and retarding the exhaust side will make the engine send more gases through the manifold hence spool the turbo faster!
more practical on DOHC cars as well! :D

booya thats exactly what u said when i posted a qn re any aftermarket cams ages ago. the usual external parts bin has been fully raided already - im sure u wouldnt want to explain everything u have already done to the booyacar if u wanted to know about something in particular you havent done. ;) btw turbo install starts next week hopefully, im just trying to find ways to counter lag. :D
seems like theres no point using the cam gears on a sohc engine if u have already got a programmable ecu to adjust timing, could be useful on a dohc to also control overlap, but the gears cant get u any extra lift.

hey altera... i didnt mean to be rude, but a lot of people on this forum have asked if cams whatever will work when they havnt even lowered the thing!
im sorry, i dont have the best memory in the world, so perhaps if you said "folling my post here.....[link to original post]" or "ive now bolted every single thing i can bolt onto the engine... i now wanna look at cams.." would of changed my whole perspective on how to answer to your post.
please dont throw rocks at me, cos 99% of the time its the novices that want to start big from nothing, forgetting to use the step ladder to climb the modificaion table that ask this kind of question, thinking that a stock engine with the stock exhaust can gain 200kw by changing the cams, and dont intend to change the ECU.
:doubt:

Well, there's a difference between advanced timing and degreed cams. They are two different things and there could be a gain with degreeing cams but you'd need to do testing and the math.
