New (oldish) member so I hope this is OK.
92 Magna Elite TR stuck in Auto 3rd gear and 200 highway km from here. Reading through old threads here it seems I might cause additional damage driving so far.
Q1 Would additional damage be done by driving the car this far?
Q2 Does changing the TCU then need specialist resetting codes or whatever (assuming this is the fault)?
Thanks
Baz

Nah mate, the damage is more when you are taking off from standstill as the trans is labourning, highway drive will not hurt at all

The TCU is plug and play, there are 4 8mm nuts under the unit to undo, little hard to get to but is the easiest way to get to it.

There are 2 types of TCU, a 3 plug (rare as rocking horse Crap) and 2 plug a lot more common

Thank You for replying - OK on both counts

I have obtained from local wrecker what is claimed to be a TCU - I am worried by your reference to four bolts/screws underneath unit. The unit I got has 3 mounting lugs attached to base with nil bolts/screws on the underside - the cover has two small phillips screws on either side. ID label on underside of unit has the following information . . . ATI 31036 B4801 A64-000 Z00.
Do you recognise this?

Once again - many thanks.

You can probably see that I would be much more confortable repairing my first car - a 57 Mark II Zephyr !!!

Hi Baz

If its in limp mode and you drove distance this is'nt a prob as mentioned its about taking off in third a lot which will over heat the tranny.

I noticed you have just grabbed a new tcu for it...was that the problem to start with? or are you just guessing?

Best of luck

let us know how you go.

The TCU is held to the plate with 4 8mm nuts, the base of the TCU has 4 studs. It will be far easier to undo the 4 nuts than the base plate as well due to room.

If the trans is in third and nothing else (ie will not kick back etc) is 99% your TCU as these are a common thing

Both right - Just guessing at this stage.
Daughter-in-Law is using the car and previous near history included overheated motor and troubles stemmed from there.
Fixed hose then mechanic fixed rough running and lack of power by replacing ignition system. Next A/C stopped started a couple of days later and is still working. Another couple of days and started up to find limited gears - stuck in 3rd and clunky into reverse. Still like that I guess as its 200 km away until mid next week.

Went to wrecker and bought recon TCU ($88) which I am still not sure is Transaxle CU as wrecker claimed. Could it be the ECU that I have?? (see above part numbers in previous reply - if anyone knows them). By mounting config you supplied I have the wrong part.

Until I get to the car and pull the TCU (or maybe 1st look at the easy to check, in car ECU) I am not 100%.

Thanks

Jebs,
Thry looking in our "Tech Torque" forum, and a thread about Workshop manuals _ these are Gen Mitsi Workshop Manuals. The "second Gen" Manual is less-fancy than 3rd Gen, biut still should have good info.

Try the links to download a copy of the Manuals, they are PDF files. Hope the links work OK for you.

These manuals might have an "exploded" diagram, which could let you guage the size/shape of the part you have bought.. OR check the wiring diagrams, and compare number of pins in connectors and shape of connectors -to check if you have right part. You may need circuit diagram, or configuration diagram in Electrical chapter.

Also, you could try Google with the part number you listed, and see what comes up either TCU or ECU.

Thanks Phil - I have the manual and will check pins etc. Never thought of Google but will try it now.

Take a pic of the bottom and plug end, I will tell you straight away what it is.

UPDATE
The unit I was given was not TCU - still don't know what it was - exchanged it for a correct TCU which I got from a wreck (Salisbury, Bris.) there from a recent side impact collision so chances are good its OK.
Replacing MD756300 with MD 750103 (Mitsi Wreckers Gold Coast said these 2 are interchangable.)
Will return to the car after Easter and install and test (hopefully without exceeding the speed limit this trip - $133 plus 1 point last week *#! etc)

Cheers Baz

That thing is not even a Magna unit lol

As I stated before, any TCU that has the same plug config will go straight in, there is no difference electrically only in shift patterns

FIXED

Thanks All - Replace TCU only first which allowed a gear change but at 4500 rpm. Idling erratic. Replaced Idle stepper moter and BINGO - CAR Running like new. Total cost $250 for parts.

Cheers Baz
