View Full Version : 4 new tyres for TF for $550 max - what's the best option?
Need to get new tyres, 205/65R15 is my size. Average around 400km's per week, a lot of that at 100kmh on country style roads. Grip and noise reduction are my main desires - roads are a bit slippery in the wet and have a fair bit of rough chipseal as well. And I know zero about tyres - they're black, they hunt in packs of 4 and they can go flat when sharp things hit them :D
Jax have some Michelins (XM1+) for around $125 each (closest store is around 1/2 hour drive away from home), KTAS have Goodyear Assurance pattern for $125 and Bridgestone RE92 pattern for $109. Beaurepaires have some Dunlop SP Sport 300E's for $129. Both KTAS and Beaurepaires are 5 mins away, so are a better bet for me convienience wise (have a couple of other tyres places close too). Now, Michelin invented the tyre (I think) and their ad looks really good and talks a good story. Have Dunlops on now, and have got 45,000k's out of them.
At this stage, it's the safest best tyre up to a total price of around $550 for the set. Brand agnostic - have had Goodyear and Bridgestone in the past and Dunlop now.
If people can offer some advice on the best I can get for my buck, would be appreciated. In VIC, looking to buy between Easter and May 1st.

Also consider Maxxis (http://www.maxxis.com/AutomobileLight-Truck.aspx) tyres which you can get from Bob Jane (they also offer 12 months interest free). I had Maxxis MA-V1 tyres on my Rada and just put a set of MA-P1 tyres on the Echo yesterday. Will keep using Maxxis tyres from now on all our cars.
I can't comment on the ones you've listed as i've never experienced them first hand. Maybe check out the tyre reviews at 1010tires (http://www.1010tires.com/tirereviews.asp) if that helps?
In the 205/65/15 size that I have run on a TS Magna & KS Verada, I have used Bridgestone RE92 and Goodyear Ducaro-GA.
The RE92 is between $105-$115 as TWW has already verified.
I believe the Ducaro-GA is about $10-$15 more per tyre.
I found the RE92 to be a very adequate tyre. Quiet, comfortable, long lasting. In fact, very long-lasting. However, this is quite an old tread pattern (was first introduced on the VS Commodore in 1995) and I believe the outright grip and braking abilities aren't at the top of the heap.
In this respect, I found the Ducaro-GA to be better. However, I reckon it is a tad noisier. By no means 'noisy' like ultra low-profiles, but if you did a back-to-back comparison between the RE92 and Ducaro-GA, I think you'd notice the added noise on the GA.
Apparently the Dunlop SP-Sport 300, as fitted as standard equipment to the 2002-2007 Camry in 205/65/15 is quite good too, but they are around $129 each I think.

There's a big range of rubber to choose from....basically any of the 'name' rubber should be good for normal conditions. Don't forget my favourite tyres ....Yokohamas.

Not sure of cost for you, but I have Michelins in 16" on my TJ Sports and KJ Rada.
These are Michelin XM1+
(XM1+ are supposed to be 20% more durable than XM1, then previous formulation/tread pattern.)
Maybe not the absolute sportiest tyre (probably by a long shot), but they are QUIET, supposed to be low rolling resistance and thus good economy, and said to be a durable long-lasting tyre. Ride comfort good, too.
Often on "special" at Bob Jane, so hopefully affordable in your size - a set for me (4) went about 640-00 each time I bought them.

Check out the Bob Jane online catalogue (12MB) here (http://catalogues.bobjane.com.au/imageicon/BJT/Prod/J00004042/C_001/BJT_PROD_J00004042_C_001_R01.pdf) for prices on 205/65R15 tyres. They have Michelins, Yokohamas and Kumhos in that size in that catalogue.

Sounds like you’re driving is similar to what we do in our district.
As mentioned in that size, the RE92 is good die-hard tyre that does an honest job very well.
The Yokohama A-drives have been getting a big following by many around here with some impressive mileages out of them driving on all surfaces.
Comfortable and quiet, stick like the proverbial, they also have the best load rating (99) in that size which makes them a bit gutsier than others.
PS… G’day everyone,
Didn’t know where to introduce mine-self, thought here would be a start….

I had a set of Dunlop SP200E's on my KE when I had it, lasted forever and a day.
I always get/recommend Dunlop now.

I have a set of Pirelli's on and theyre great for wet grip and low noise, esp on highway driving,
Pirelli P6 and it cost me $140 each I think.
Thanks for the comments guys. I've since found there's a local tyre shop doing the Michelins XM1+'s as well, so I'll have a pretty good choice within a 1 minute walk. I am leaning towards the michelins - read some good things about them. Tyre Day will be May 1st so have 3 weeks to make the call.
Thanks again for the feedback - appreciate it all.
