View Full Version : Air Intake Resonators Question

Hey guys
so i got bored and decided to remove the 2 resonators after my air sensor in my air intake.

covered them up with a chair tip rubber (that you put under the legs to stop it scratching floors) 35mm in diametre.

My question is, would this have changed the tone/noise going to my exhaust? or is it just me, because i feel that its a quieter/deeper tone.
and i feel as if i have more constant power through changing gears, might have dropped or gained some but it wouldn't be much right?

And i wont have a problem that i've removed the resonators and have covered em right?

if someone could give me a hand here it would be great :) thanks

any percieved change in power delivery is placebo effect.

Not sure about it affecting the exhaust note, but I'm inclined to think no.

ahh was thinking so lol, was sitting in the car going through last years psych stuff in my head as to whether its a placebo on my own judgements haha!

ahh okay thanks for that :) cheers

That's the sad thing. Some people have looked in to it too much and have come up that it has something to do with displacement of the engine. This doesnt even make sense whoever came up with that because they removed them from the later model cars to save money. lol

They're their purely to tone down the intake noise. End of story.

The best one i heard was they were incase the engine backfired and the outward pressure had some where to go.:roflwtf:

They are acoustic dampers, nothing more. They don't store "extra" air in the inlet so when you hit the accelerator that "extra" air gives you increased thrust for blistering overtaking... That's another urban myth i have heard! lol

If you've got a sharp ear, you "might" notice a little more induction noise and thats about it.

I get heaps more induction noise in mine with them off. Can only really notice it inside the car, outside just sounds like an old ceiling fan on high

Removing the Helmholtz resonators will change the induction tuning in a naturally aspirated engine - see http://www.dinamoto.it/DINAMOTO/on-line%20papers/risuonatore/risuonatore.html

If you want to know how strong the effect is and the engine speeds at which it is positive and negative, do back to back dyno runs.

So wats the best thing to do is put all the stock resonators back on.? Thing i dont understand is different model have more and some have less resonators. So does that mean they tune each model differently

Wow, I totally 100% understood everything he was crapping on about.
I've removed them on 3 cars so far, made no difference at all besides awesome sound.
cost = $4 in spice bottles (to rape the lids off)

As above 100%

my second gen has a K&N oval pod and when removing the resonators it sound heaps better inside and out.

When giving it a good full throttle rev my neighbor yelled over the fence and said what the ********* did you put in that? lol

No real power gain and fuel eco is the same.

Use mc'cormic spice lids.....there tapered so they wont get sucked in and fit perfect on a second gen try them.

As above search is your best friend..lol

cheers

Oh i just noticed your new post...

more or less reses on a car are for keeping the noise down thats it!

so whats the diameter of the hole from the dampers? might pop into bunnings on the way to grab some stopers or what not...

Go to safeway and get 2 bottles of McKormicks Spice with the screw on lids, not the flip tops.

i used rubber stoppers for the bottom of chairs 35mm, i put the resonators back on when i had the engine trouble tho, found out one of my rubber stopers was cracked so i might try those lids. i hate the look of the resonators :) lol

use welsh plugs!

yer try the lids

any crack or air gap will upset the AFM.

other wise sweet , sounds good and that's about it!

also use good screw adjusting brackets, pis* off the tension ones.!

cheers
