Was talking with a bloke today about mitsu's (as ya do) and he goes "What Model magna came out with a DOHC? I said..."None mate..."
He goes..."Wanna make a bet?"

Anyway.....He reckons there is a Limited edition TJ Called the SSi-R. Which for a limited run of 50 units had the 6G74 DOHC s4 motor in it. Apparently to gauge interest in the aussie market in the Quad cam motors. Also mentioned some of them came out in a Goldy color which had the paint code "XXX" which was like a blank paint code or something...

Can any of the mitsu guru's confirm this? Very VERY keen to know more about it thats for sure...

Thats the thing. Apparently only 50 made so wouldnt be many out there now. The guy did his apprenticeship at mitsubishi and knows quite a bit about cars, weather or not its BS though, well....I need proof! He reckons he has seen it with his own eyes. 4 cams I said? He goes yep, 4...

Also reckons the KS verada touring wagon manual GB had a different final drive ratio (what I have)....interesting...

Doing a search on here for ssi-r gives a few hits, but the consensus is that its a dealer special car.

If it actually existed, we would know about it on here. I mean, theres only 20 TMR380's and look at the number of threads around them.

But....does anyone know for sure?

Hes pulling your leg.

If there were 50 tj's made with a DOHC engine, how is it possible there isnt at least one thread here about it?

Not to mention the dozens of threads about people wanting to do conversions with that engine.

And if they had that engine, why would they put a SOHC into the Ralliart?

Well not everything makes it onto AMC:P
He said they did it to gauge the public's reaction to the Twin cam motor...

One of the people on here who used to work here is bound to bust it, as i dont see a reason why none of them have ever mentioned it

I've seen a TH in wollongong with a sticker on the side similar to SSi-R. But yea pretty sure its just a dealer special. Mitsubishi didn't make a 4 cam 6G7x, well at least not according to the source of all knowlage wikipedia

Well they did, but not that was ever factory fitted to a magna.

To be sold to the general public engines need to be ADR compliant. They don't fit test engines to customer cars to gauge response. Thats what prototype testing is for. So my bet the dude that told you that is pulling your leg...

As above, they would have to have them all ADR compliant, crash tested as the crumple zones will work differently with a different motor etc etc

This guy has his hand on what ever part you want to imagine

There were SSI-r models, dealer dress up's sold, they still have the same engine as the rest of the model but a kit

What this clown has most likely seen is an import Diamante which has slipped through the cracks (WA used to ahve very lean import laws) or even an ex diplomats car

The "XX" paint code was used on ALL MMAL paint trial cars and there were NO DOHC TJ magnas built by MMAL

If you look in the parts books, a "Magna DOHC" is listed with valid part numbers (i've never compared those part numbers to the SOHC versions, don't have access to that portion of the database). However I always assumed it was a typo and continue to do so. SSI-R i'm pretty certain i've seen before, but it certainly doesn't look to be a MMAL factory model, more likely a dealer pack.

They get a 'Real' Build No. Plate and all MMAL do for Ralliart's is a flimsy sticker! lol

As Jason said XX was the code for paint trial cars, like the chromaflare ones. Mitsi never fitted DOHC engines in the factory.Dealers brought out all sorts of weird and wonderful decals and kits and called them things. Panther, SSR-i, etc etc.

I've seen these around too. They were a limited edition bonus pack style thing, like the TP encore and the 3rd gen solaras.

From memory they had a bit of extra balls and colour coding, plus stickers? never heard of a dohc 6g74 for sale here

The Encore and Solara's were factory specials, not dealer specials though.

I've seen a few around, mainly white.
I remember all the paint trial cars we would do in the factory, i had to pull them of line and metal finish them to perfection and then i would follow them through to EPD and check them over again.
I remember some really cool colours and some shockers.

I decided to mail them for shits and giggles and ask them where the sports seats, carpet, dash cluster, dash board, colour coded plastics and mirrors and wheels went on this one. They actually replied to state it was a special edition TH Sports and had a new bar on it.

It say this guy probably never opened the bonnet on this so called SSi-R to be able to confirm his claim or his pulling your leg. Mitsubishi Aus never released such a car from factory with DOHC so def must be dealer option.

GSR Magna had a 150kw 3.0 v6 and a Talon body kit, ive been told by Dj Mitsubishi they added Headers, and a cam change backed by MML (Not sure still dont believe lol)

SSi-R was a magna added with Alloys and a spolier with decals they said they sold 2 but never in a TJ and even if they did, they would be sure it would have a 3.5 155 kw exec engine.

if the SSi-R magna had a 3.5 DOHC we would of heard of it lol

GRDPuck
20-02-2012, 09:21 AM
in a previous correspondence with Mitsubishi Customer Service, I had the XX Paint code explained to me as...

The paint code "XX" is used for paint trial vehicles. This is when we paint a small number of vehicles in a new colour as a trial. At this stage in the process the paint does not yet have a code allocated and is therefore given the code "XX".

As for the SSi-R - whatever it did or didn't have, it sure had a nice sounding name. SSi-R sounds and looks cool as a model name. ...and they got a better build badge/plate than our Ralliart stickers! (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66668&p=1035843&viewfull=1#post1035843)

lol Ah, the good ol' days! I remember them well.

Mitsu went through a stage where they tried to lift flagging sales, and brought out a whole stream of "specials". Mostly extra bodywork, improved interiors, decals etc. some heavy discounting happened too.
None of the specials had any mechanical changes, definitely no quad cam motors. BUT if you believe there is hidden treasures in the old Magnas, believe what you will. lol While you are dreaming, chuck in a turbo or 2 as well. lol

Of course, privately or dealer imported Diamantes are a seperate case.
