View Full Version : Can anyone explain... Pre-Ignition Clicking

One thing i've found on this car that's different from my previous second gens is a curious little feature. When you switch the ignition to the "ON" position (ON, not START) it sounds like several solenoids or electronic components are clicking from behind/below the inlet manifold. This doesn't stop until the engine is started or the ignition is switched back to the ACC position.
Anyone here happen to know what's happening as it does this?
Trying to further my collection of information and general knowledge on the 2G 6G72 12v engine.

Gremlins!
I have had this in a 3rd Gen, too. A TJ Sports (ser 1.5 or ser 2) - and only recently noticed, after new battery installed. Sounds like all the injectors having a tap-dance? Gawd knows why - I think mine may have ceased, or else I'm not noticing it.
Will be VERY interested to hear what this is about.......

The one component that makes a clicking sound is the starter motor ..... (Wiki)
If a starter solenoid receives insufficient power from the battery, it will fail to start the motor, and may produce a rapid clicking or clacking sound. The lack of power can be caused by a low or dead battery, by corroded or loose connections in the battery cable, or by a damaged positive (red) cable from the battery. Any of these problems will result in some, but not enough, power being sent to the solenoid, which means that the solenoid will simply make a clicking sound, rather than setting the starter motor in motion.
To reduce the likelihood of starter solenoid failure, the battery connections should be cleaned and tightened at every oil change. Starter solenoid problems can be diagnosed by a mechanic at a service center by a test of the car's starting, charging and battery systems.

That will be the isc motor. This is located on the bottom section of the throttle body and controls your idle rpm. Depending on sound it is making, it could be on the way out. ...

After starting my car makes the same noise, time for a new ISC I guess.

Elwyn has the right idea, sounds like all the injectors tap dancing. lol A series of clicks in quick succession but in no particular order or sequence.
The ISC seems to be working perfectly normally after the engine is started. I'll keep it in mind for replacement though.

the sound is the ISC, you will hear it after your have reset the ecu, or if you get a flat and replace it. Its like its setting the parameters for operation. Supposed to only happen the first start after ecu reset or battery replacement.
