Hey Guys
This has probably been covered before but ive never found anything decent, so... where exactly do i put the under door lights for my TJ.... im about to complete my foot well lights... and im taking it to the next step...
i know that i have to wiring it up to the interior light.. ill probably relay it so i dont draw to much from the red/white cord running up the A pillar...
but thats where i get stuck WHERE DO I PUT THE LIGHTS????? i have a feeling that i have read in the forums somewhere that it is possible to put 2 lights in the door.. one underneath and one under the arm rest
EDIT: Where exactly can i buy the light covers from??
DOUBLE EDIT: is it possible to make these dim with the rest of the interior lights with a relay?
ANOTHER EDIT: If i run the whole lot as LED's would i really need to have it relayed as the power draw is soooo minimal

you can probably get away with no relay if its just leds. if its small leds you could almost tap into the power going to the existing red door open light thingy. not sure on all the ratings etc in there but i'd assume they'd be using 10 amp wiring, replace the existing globe with ledss, tap into the wiring and the LEDs should behave the same was as the standard red light does

Heres a good place to start:

Also working on the same setup for the rear doors ATM, just waiting for parts to come from the USA as I was unable to source 100mm CCFL's in Australia. So stay tuned...
LED's are an option, but since I used CCFL in the front doors I wanted them to be the same in the rear...

hey i was just looking at the wiring diagrams of a TJ and it says that just say the Right REAR door is open and that means that only that door light is turned on.. not all lights
can someone with factory ground lighting please confirm

Excellent! Saw the one with the fluros a while ago but wanted the factory look. Will also suit the LED bulbs I have in footwell and door much better. Fantastic posts by both of you. Greatly appreciated.:facejump:
Ok, lets start:
1. LEDs will not dim like hallogens because the power draw is different
2. If you want a "fade" effect, best bet is capacitor experimentation
3. If you look in the bottom of your door cards, you will see a small gap, this is where the lights go
4. CCFL's will give a better light spread (perfectly even) then LED's
5. You can buy 10cm CCFL's from Jaycar, ask for them, they may not be on the shelf

The LED strips - with tiny surface-mounted leds approx 1-2cm apart - give a nice even soft glow, plenty of light to see obstacles by (I have used white LEDS tho, not coloured).
BUT while I think they are perfect for the under-door job, they would give FAR less light than CFL's.
The power drawn by LEDs in tiny - no need for relays IMHO, and I've run mine off the existing red-oval door courtesy lights.
How do you propose to wire-in the REAR door lights, fellas? Where are you drawing power, and (esp if non-power windows) routing into the door?

Ok, want to do the mod in thread by Grelise (factory look).
Wreckers I've checked don't have the door trims with puddle light. In any case don't believe they would sell the lower door trim piece only - would need to buy whole door trim.
Has anybody attempted to mount the light harness on a door trim that did not have the factory opening?
Would appreciate any advice before I wreck the trim with a stanley knife. :woot:

only need to make small insisions (spelling?) into the door card, and itl be right on the bottom of the trim - it wont be noticeable unless you get down on the ground and look up while the door is open.
make small cuts to start with, coz its easier to make the hole in the trim for the lights bigger, and it is smaller.
and yeah, wreckers should sell you the lower part only of the door trim (they did to Grelise anyway)
there is a small (on mine anyway, unsure of a TJ) indent in the metal in the middle of the door pocket / trim lower section, you could always use that as a place for the light to spill out of if you dont want to cut your trims at all?

I got mine seperate from the wreckers for $15 each for the trim panels themselves. I just walked in found what I was looking for seperated the trim then took the pieces I was after and only showed that.
Failing that I still have the old lower trim from my car if you want to use that to cut up instead of your own.

Thanks for the offer. I will try another couple of wreckers this weekend and see what happens. Sounds like the type of wrecker you went to was a 'pick-a-part'. The one near me here rarely gets a 3rd. gen, and when they do, they are quickly stripped. The other wreckers I called would not split the trim - if they had it! Had a close look at your interior and it appears that your lower door trims are the same colour as mine - the darker grey. If I come up empty will definitely arrange to purchase your oldies and have them shipped down. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks for your assistance thus far. :facejump:

Hey Grelise.
Just an update to previous post.
Finally found a front pair of door trims from a KE from a wrecker. Would not separate the bits so cost me $80 for the pair of complete front door trims with puddle light assembly. The trims were in poor to fair condition (actually disgusting). After I separated the lower trim, I had to shampoo and pressure clean the carpet bit twice before the grey colour of the carpet showed through! Just need to complete the install now. Finally after months of searching the hunt is over..for these parts. Thanks again for your informative post....
