ok well ive done a search and have come up with nothing...

I think that i have a relay problem with my high beams or so it seems..

here's the situation..

driving home last night and sitting behind a car i noticed that my lights appeared a dull yellow (on low beams). where as normally they are whitish (crystal visions).. so when i got a chance to pull over and have a bit of a look i noticed that my high beams were still partly on (my guess is they were about 20% of full brightness) and my low beams were also a little duller then they should be (at the arm they were on low beam)...i figured the high beams being partly on is what was giving the yellow color.. so i turn the lights off then on again (on low beams).. same thing.. then flick the high beams on.. no problems, they are bright as normal, and the low beams are working fine.. flick the high beams off.. same thing.. so i then proceeded to just flick the high/low stick a few times then all of a sudden.. every thing was back to normal.. but that wasnt the end of it.. driving along i would notice that it would go back to what it orginally doing.. i also noticed that the blue high beam light would partly come on when this happened..

so what im really asking is.. is that a relay problem.. and if so.. wheres the relay so i can replace it..

cheers

David.

I might be wrong but i don't think it would be a relay problem. Its more likely a bad earth causing the dull lights.check earthing points and battery terminals for corrosion. If it is a relay the are located in the black box next to the battery.

yeah i have the same problem, when i put my parras in and i turned them on for the first time they worked perfectly. then i hit the high beams and they worked perfectly too, but once i turned them back to low beam the high beam globes stayed on just not as bright. its been like this ever since. im pretty sure i wired them up correctly as was instructed by a thread on this site. so if anyone has any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Darcy,

I assume that you are thinking the relays are not releasing properly or otherwise burnt out, and keeping some flow of power - rather than making a clean disconnect of High Beams when you want to dip the lights? This sounds plausible, or another issue may be a worn combination switch on the steering column.

Anyhoooo, to answer your question, most relays are in a box in the engine bay - over near-ish the battery. You don't state what Magna you drive, and I'm too lazy to check your profile. 3rd Gens have the headlight relays in that box near the battery - alongside the passenger mudguard. There are also fuses in that same box...... and just to confuse the issue there are often a few relays and some fuses on the drivers kick-panel - below the dash and to the right of the accelerator pedal. Headlamp relays, tho, are usually in the engine bay.

If you can feel that a headlamp relay is hot, or its visibly distorted by heat damage etc - you may have an answer. To test/check relays, you can look for a relay of same rating in that same box, and swap-over. Be sure to check if the swapped relay isn't getting hot!! ie: you may have a tired/dead relay which IS your problem, OR you might have a PROBLEM which is killing the relay. Hope you understand what I mean.

EDIT: In any case, do a simple check of wiring looms near lights for damaged or melted insulation etc. Check headlamps earths as mentioned above would be a good idea. If swapping relays doesn't fix, have a look and the light switch for worn/dirty contacts.
