Hi,
Every time i say reverse and then turn left to right i get a clonking sound (Only on passenger side) which i have been told by my mechanic that it is my Upper Strut Support.

Has anyone had this problem and if so what is the cost in repairing?

I had this problem also but it wasn't the strut top it was the spring makeing the noise it wasn't seated into position properly. If it is the strut top will only need the bearing replaced more than likely .Roughly $10-$15 per side aslong as you can do it yourself.

have you had any suspension work done recently?
If so it may be that someone put the strut top on wrong. Does it also happen when normal driving?

I could have sworn someone said genuine mitsi strut bearings are $80 a piece :tired:

Car was lowered (Change of Suspension) more then 3 years ago. Has only done it for the last year.

Only does it when turning from left to right (Usually from a full lock) Complete Left then turning to right

Spoke to Mechanic briefly and he said wont really damage anything yet will need to be done.

Will have to get him to check it 100% - Might be better or worse then first thought.

Obviously just looking at worst case scenario which is Full Upper Strut Support.

Any ideas on this cost?

Any bearing shop will have the bearing to replace them with just a matter of pushing the old bearing out and the new back in.

You don't need the whole plate normally you can just replace the bearing.$30-$40 for bearings or $160 for the plates i know which one i would chose.

Are the bearings pressed in or can this be done at home?

problr pressed in, but you should be able to knock them out with a hammer and drift. use the old bearing or a socket that is the same diameter as the outer race to knock it in square.

+1 what he said or can also be done with a bench vice.

Thanks for the advice will have a look into it.

Anyone know if this would in fact cause major damage if not repaired straight away?

Bearings in the plates are pressed in, the plates are also bent over the bearing to prevent them coming out so no they do not come out!

Also a big issue is the rubber mount goes soft and can start to fracture like an engine mount does

If you are talking suspension, do not be tight, just get the proper parts. It is well worth it in the long run when you do not end up with a strut sticking out of the front guard. Aside from poor looks, it really makes steering difficult

As for the OP, check your steering rack and most importantly the mounting bolts as these can come loose. Could also be the top was not put in the right place, it has moved a little more which can happen and is now making contact

To check your bearing plates, jack and support the car, undo the 3 top nuts and drop the strut down a little and you will be able to determine if the place is very loose

If you are only getting the noise in one direction I would bet my bucks against the tops being the issue and be looking more to the spring plate or rack

I've got a lot of movement in my front strut mounts at the moment (I think they're still the original ones from 220K km's ago) and am getting them replaced in the next month or so. Would you mind elaborating a bit on exactly what parts I should be asking for when I go in to order them from my Mitsu dealer? Parts interpreter there isn't very good unless I'm very specific...

Im with MadMagna.

You cant press them out. I asked a bearing place to put some new ones in and they said it can’t be done on my strut tops.
