View Full Version : headunit wire through firewall
hey guys, just wondering how on earth you got the headunit wire through the firewall to connect directly to the battery. The only grommet (sp?) i could find was the power steering and i don't have my drill bits here, so i can't drill a hole :doubt:
Did a quick search, couldn't find nething?
this is a 98 TF advance.
Cheers,
Cam.
headunit wire thru firewall? or did u mean amp?
dunno, i got a multimeter to find out what the constant and acc power was on the wiring harness coz the one on installdr was wrong! i printed it out thinking i was gonna get it easy, but its sorta right, just back to front, rotated (pi)/37, then flipped again horizontally, rotate (pi)/2, that gives u exactly where the power and ground is meant to be. the rest is trial and error. basically the ppl and owned the car before me (cops) drilled a hole where the clutch pedal was meant to be.
Edit: yes some ppl reckon there's a rubber grommit behind the centre console where u can just poke right thru  i remember it was discussed quite a lot

Seriously, you couldn't find anything? Bugger. I just typed "firewall" into the search thing and found 40 odd posts.
Anyways, from what I can remember there is a rubber grommet on the passenger side of the firewall behind the foam stuff. There should be a few cables going in there already, just make some room and stick it through. There are pics in other posts here, but I'm too lazy to go and find them. lol

If it's your headunit.. earth to one of the many bolts behind the centre console.. its as easy as that.. if its an amp.. earth to the chair!

you don't need to run a new cable from the Battery to the H/U - just use the factory wiring for the 12V constant and the Acc wires - then you use RCA's for speakers and amp to any decent point there
Manual
i went straight to the battery from the headunit with larger than normal wire because it gives a bigger power feed. I have the Alpine 9815 and it tells you specifically to NOT use the wire harness in the car because the amp in the HU is higher powered. A friend ignored this and melted his wire, coulda started a fire.
I typed in "wire firewall" and came up with nothing but then i tried again after with "firewall" and found a really good post for it. But, i can tell you, there is no real easy way of doing it, compared to the TR. The TR has a usable grommet where the brake cable goes through. The only one i could find (before finding the relevant thread) was the power steering, and i didn't think that was a real flash idea.
Cheers for the help,
Cam.

So you got a V- drive 60Wx 4. Isn't that suppose take your existing voltage and raise it to 17.2V which means the existing 45Wx 4 is boosted to 60Wx 4? Strange because the booster is in the headunit and shouldn't need to draw any more current. Its funny to cause the amp in those h/u are only 45Wx 4 and the middle range are 50Wx 4. :doubt:

Just drill a hole yourself. Check that both sides are clear and drill away, that way you can get the correct size hole for whatever guage power cable you desire.
Everytime I've done an install, I always gone about it this way. Much quicker and easier than searching for a grommit, and you can also get the hole where you want it, for the neatest install.
Just a thought.

Mr Charisma: I dunno how it works, i just followed the manufacturers warning :D :D
podrcr: Well i didnt actually have any drill bits here in adelaide (all at home in port augusta) so i couldn't drill through the firewall. However, when it comes time to hook up battery no.2, i will be running 4gauge through the firewall, and will need to drill a hole.
