View Full Version : The screws that hold the leaf guard in - what are they called?

Well, have the new leaf guards in now but one of the screws was stuffed. It's a small screw with a plastic expander bit on it. I have no idea what to go looking for at SCA and Autobarn. I've looked in the workshop manual and these screws are not numbered - just shown (thanks Mitsubishi!).

Can anyone give me some guidance on what to go looking for please?

Tony,

Have a look at Ripco, Super-Rice, or Rice-o-Barn - and look for a revolving display stand "Champion" - with little blister-packs of fasteners etc.

What you want seems to be called a "SCRIVET" and you need the 6mm size - IF its the smaller fasteners (4 on those panels) you need. The Middle fastener, where the two panels overlap, is a larger thing - and I assume a Xmas Tree Clip would do for there (I replaced my panels today, only to find every one of those fasteners was missing - I haven't bothered with the middle one yet).

I found the 6mm Scrivets were fine in 3 locations, but the fourth, drivers-side near engine bay, was VERY tight. Loosen the screw right back first, then screw it in firmly - some may need a fair bit of downforce to get the thread started.

Scrivets were about $3-29 per pack of 3 up here (or course, I needed bloody four, didn't I?). I thought that was a absolute rip-off for what they are - except our Mitsi parts counter wanted $6-45 EACH - just unbelievable. So, Super-Cheap it was, and worked fine.

EDIT:: How much did your boot-lid liner set you back? Saw in another thread that you bought one.

I thought about doing the same, but didn't want to encourage surface rust under those trims, given the amount of mud and crap that was underneath my old ones.
Scrivets will be fine, I don't intend to remove the panels again anytime soon. Windscreen replacement is the most likely scenario that they will ever need to be removed again.

Tell me about it! Now I know where all the lost top soil has gone from the farmers - it's under my leaf guards. Took me a good 5 minutes with an air blower to clean it all out.

Thanks people, going scrivet hunting this morning.

I thought of that too but serious rust will take time to develop.

I just wanted to seal the things as part of solving the water leaks I had coming into the cabin onto my feet every time it rained. I got some rubber stripes from Clark Rubber and replaced the useless foam Mitsubishi tried to use to keep the water out.

if water is leaking in through your fresh air intake then try cleaning out your plenum drains
also if your lower window garnish is lifting then this wont help either... glue it down

I did that, but this car came out of the same factory my Valiant did with it's half inch lip on the plenum drain holes....

My fix has cured the leak, I no longer have water dripping onto the BMC.
