hey all.
i have a tj 3.5.

i need to replace the 3 plugs and all 6 leads, but the rear plugs (as im sure you know) are under the intake manifold.

im sure i can do the work myself (with my mechanic who lives across the rd) but just wanna double check that this is how-to and make sure i have all the parts.

afaik, i need a manifold gasket, emc gasket (the pipe that comes into the back of the maniflod) and new leads and plugs.

DO I NEED ANYTHING ELSE other than those 2 gaskets? as i dont wanna get halfway thru and realise i have to drive back down to the shops, as i can only do it on weekends when everythings closed.

and if possible could i please get the part numbers of the gaskets ill need? (spark plugs and leads are a no-brainer, but i need gasket part number so i can order from mitsu durin the week.)

thanks guys

ben

You don't even need the gaskets - they're steel, and are re-usable.

Check that the rear bank of plug tubes don't have oil in them, otherwise you will need to replace the spark plug tube seals and rocker cover gaskets. Bursons sell a gasket kit with everything you need.

From what I can remember from MadMagna telling me, the rocker covers do not require a sealant - infact you're more likely to make them leak that way. The spark plug tube seals do on the otherhand. Shoot him a PM if you're unsure. He also mentioned that leads should be ok. Unless the leads are arcing (you can tell by a fine white powder coating on the leads), you shouldn't need to do them.

That should be a step by step guide.

thanks guys! :)

edit: dave (my mechanic) has a ratchet extension that can get the plugs out without having to take off the rocker covers :ninja:

Mate, how will you get the spark plug tube down there but more important than that, how will you pull the ignition leads out to get to them first? There isn't any clearance. :)

Just be careful it all stays attached :) you'll have to take it off anyway if the attachment comes off in the tube!

yeah, just take some pics with a decent camera, of your progress if your not 100% in taking off the manifold, its not hard to do. oh with the rocker covers, buy some new gaskets, replace, but make sure you do the bolts up in the correct sequence to the correct torque, and make sure the outer and inner lip is tight against the gasket, or it will leak.
keep an eye on it over a few months, i had to retighten mine, as i notcied that area getting a little wet and collecting dirt, so i retightend the bolts as the gasket settled.

I just did this recently (among other things)

Manifold is easy to take off, just undo your bolts on it (3 on front, 2 in middle holding down, those are 12mm sockets)
then a couple of 10mm sockets (x3) on the rear of the manifold
take out the panel filter, take the pipes off to the TB, take the power off from the MAF and throttle body and take the manifold off with the TB and Maf connected

when you've done it a few times its like a 5 min job to take it off

Should also mention to maybe mark where your throttle cable is or when you put it all back on your idle might be off...

yeah we did the front 3 a few months ago, and didnt have to remove rockers cover... they all came out fine...
