Two things that have been bothering me about the car

First off: Recently the VRX has been having a random tendency to start then a sec or two later turn off. If I try to start it again straight away it tries to but never fully kicks over. Some times it takes two or three tries with a little bit of touch on accelerator before it'll kick over. Once it turned itself off so I left it for about 10mins came back and its started first time.

It only started a month ago and happens very sporadically, did it on random days the first week, then didn't do it for a week and a bit then this week its done it twice.Really have no idea on this one so open to suggestions.

Secondly: When the engine is cold it is very rough to drive and has a ticking/knocking noise. Most member have dismissed my thoughts its piston slap saying its most likely the lifters however most member's threads I have read about the lifters say the sound continues after the engine gets warm while mines goes away completely once it reaches running temp and the engine smooths out. Does anyone have ideas about this? I've thought maybe the oil return lines might be gettin clogged when it cools I dunno its just a though.

Car Currently has 186,xxxkms, using HPR10/40 oil and also I dunno if this would affect the first problem but the battery has these two crazy big fuses one it as the car has a amp and used to have a sub.

You could always try running some 15W40 at you next oil change, may just be the oil is just a bit light at cold and causing the lifter/tappet noise.

I'll try this but I don't think it'll affect anything. I've moved from Castrol Magna-Tech to HPR5 to HPR10 and it never affects it. I think theres something mechanical that needs cleaning or replacing but I can't think what. I know the sound is mostly from the front bank and only last till the engine warms.

This should be in the 3rd gen section - but anywho.

Lifter/lash adjusted noise is my guess. I have the same noise, and yes, it does go away when the engine is warm.

There is another similar noise, so - try this next time it happens. As soon as the noise starts, turn the car off, wait 2 seconds, turn it back on again.

First issue is either the Battery, or the stupid immobiliser wire. Im leaning more towards immobiliser.

Second problem, very hard to say without hearing it. Might be better to pop down to the mechanic and see what he thinks ?

Lifters can get quiet once the oil warms up and is thinner, but, generally, to good ears you can seill here them.

Dunno, either way eventually I wanna have the top end pulled rebuilt and hopefully that'll settle it once and for all but that will require more monies than I have at the moment... actually just off the top of your head anyone know how much that would cost?

This noise happened in my last car aswell, in a festiva. One of my friends (a mechanic) said its low oil pressure.

Turn the car off, turn it back on again - noise is gone.

Awaits to be told my mate was wrong???
