Hey guys, just curious to know if Magna's have speed limiters in them to restrict them travelling past a certain speed, speficially the third gens..
cheers
I believe its 220 km/h for all 3rd gens other then ralliarts.

ahh okay, thanks :)
that's still pretty fast though
was just curious as the speedo goes to 240 :P

yea i believe it was due to the speed rating of the factory tyres, as the ralli art had, better wheel/tyre combo, the speed limiter was either removed or raised higher cant remember
It can be physically removed or electronically manipulated.....but that would be illegal.....

really i thought it was in the ECU itself, and the only way around it was a replacement aftermarket ecu

Speed limiter is 200kph due to "H" rated tyres, but most show 210 or so on the speedo. "H" rated are OK up to 210kph so don't know why Mitsubishi set cut lower.
17" tyres were "V" rated but limiter was still 200kph as far as I'm aware.
Cheers,
Alan

so an aftermarket ECU could possibly remove the speed limiter?

But why would you want to?

:stoopid:
when on earth are you planning on going that fast, spend your time and money on improving your 0-100 times.
i would sacrafice top speed for acceleration any day, (within reason)

But why would you want to?
it's not that i want to, I'm just curious to know
I don't have any reason to go at that sort of speed in my magna anyway
But why would you want to?
Quite frankly I would be too frightened taking it to these kinds of limits, and even more frightened to know someone else on the same road would be doing so near me....

The Ralliart has a 240km/h limiter. Highest I have had a magna is 210km/h and it was at the limiter.
before the speed limits were introduced in the outback, someone took their magna up to 280, its on youtube. As far as i can tell, even the 4 speed auto should have enough gearing to go to 300. I will have to work it out based on standard rev limit. Obviously power and aerodynamics would stop most magnas from reaching that speed

its def 220. after that it feels like the fuel cuts out and it stutters...like you i was curious so i found a vacant "airstrip" and tested it out one day..:shifty:
this was a while ago now though. but im pretty sure its still the same.

i would have had the body kit fit about 4inches higher and done something to lower the whole car. It looks good until you hit the front bar and you can see the bottom rad.support about halfway up the opening hahaha makes the kit look like a case. Mean looking car though but arent we talking 2nd gens here?

Its shows between 210-220 on the clock. Which is inaccurate at those speeds anyway. I have heard its 213, but I'm pretty sure its about 200 "true speed." Mine goes through to 225 on the speedo, then comes back to sit at 215ish. And before you flame, I have a mate with an old section of highway on his property that gets used as an airstrip. This isn'ty something I sugget doing anywhere, without at least checking all tyre pressures are PERFECT, brakes are PERFECT, suspension is in extremely good condition (I did this in my lowered Sports, and it was wandering around enough, I'd never attempt it with stock suspension), all fluids new/full. Imagine wiping out at those speeds, you'd have no hope. DON'T DO IT ON THE BLOODY ROAD FOR GOD'S SAKE!! Theres enough idiots out there already.

There was a later an intercooler filling that front spot. There's pics here (http://www.fastmagna.com/gallery/Features/Booyas-Magna/).
I've got the video on my computer, from memory he hits 281km/h.. but barely anything in that car would have been stock, and he did live in the NT, so I can see why it was removed.
I wouldn't be too keen on hitting limiter in my car.... I'd be worried the stock brakes wouldn't slow me down at all.

On a dyno it stopped at 218km/h speedeo showing 220 just a tad maybe 221 km/h on 17". Before they had my transmission replaced it topped out at 230 sumthing on the dyno but had atleast 4 kw more on the old transmission at the wheels

Just on 8 years ago I drove my old TE 3.0 manual from Adelaide to Perth & back.
On the way there, in the middle of the Nullabor plain, dead straight dead flat road, around 11.00 am, fine weather, not another vehicle in sight, I decided to see what it's top speed was. Running on 215/55 16 tyres at 50 PSI and with minimal mods (just a Lukey LR2779 IIRC) I hit an indicated 220km/h in both 4th & 5th. Both times the speed limiter cut in, it would have easily pulled another 5 or 10km/h without the speed limiter. I later tested the speedo accuaracy against a satnav and it was only 2% optimistic. So the true top speed was around 215km/h. Shortly after I got back from that trip I did some research, on these forums and elsewhere, and found a few references that the TE/TF 3.0 speed limiter was set for 215 km/h. I believe that speed limiter setting stayed the same throughout most 3rd gens, but maybe with the TL or TW it was reduced to 200km/h, as Alan J suggests.
And no, doing 215km/h at the time was not at all dangerous, considering the conditions -wide empty straight flat road, middle of the day, fine weather, car & driver both in good nick. The front end started to get a little light at 200km/h so both times when I hit the speed limiter I buttoned right off, and I was doing 215km/h for only a few seconds.

think i was talking to Shoot about something along these lines when i was on the gold coast at christmas
we thought it might have been due to if a manufacturer limites (speed limits) a car to X speed, then they only have to built the car strong enough for that X speed.
but, if there is no limter there, then they have to built it to be tough enough to withstand X+y etc.
think he said that the 380s didnt have a speed limiter on them?
not 100% sure on that tho.
by only building a car to be able to go to speed X, then they save money in the long run...

Can you imagine cruising along a NT backroad, looking in the rearview mirror and seeing this with that massive intercooler baring down on you....

Speed limiter is set at 210Km/h + or - 5 kmh or all non ralliart magnas. The speed is taken directly from the speed sensor not what the actual speedo shows on its dial (as these are not completely accurate as we know) Ralliarts are 240kmh.
If any one gets the ECU reflashed (by SKR) then the speedlimiter can be rasied higher which is whats been done to mine because the base map used in my car was from chadwicks "GTP" race magna

Not sure i wsnt in the seat doing it, I wasnt game to just incase sumthing happened as there would be no insurance unless it as done by approved operator
