View Full Version : TF 3.5 Conversion ?

Howdy.
I've been reading threads about putting a 3.5L engine into a TF and retaining the same ECU and Auto.
I've seen people mention putting the 3L manifold onto the 3.5 ?
When people say manifold are they referring to the entire manifold including intake plenum or just the intake plenum?
If it means swapping the whole manifold what about the injectors?
Has anyone installed a 3.5 without having to swap manifolds?
If swapping the manifolds what do you lose over using the 3.5 manifold?
Cheers.

AFAIK Only diff in 3-3.5L Upper manifolds is the EGR support?..
You need to use the 3.5L Lower plenium as the block is bigger, thus the V is bigger, and the heads poke out ever so slightly more.

you would also need to get an engineers certificate because its just over the 15% capacity increase, other than that and what tuff said its pretty much a straight swap. ah not sure about your ECU though.

I hope someone else is good at maths?
3.5 = 3497
3.0 = 2972
From my calculations the difference is 11.7% so i wouldn't need an engineers cert?

just over 17%
3497 - 2972 = 525
525 / 2972 = 17.66%

yeah what he said :D
i was going to put a 3.6 in my TF but when i spoke to the RTA they said id need a cert. so i just stuck with the 3.0.
yeah either upgrade to a th or newer or just put some work into a 3.0 they have potential.
just over 17%
3497 - 2972 = 525
525 / 2972 = 17.66%

3.5L was available in the same series (KF)
Swap engine, update engine number at RTA. Profit. (In NSW anyway)

pft i did mine, and only got a blue slip done,
read my 3.5L conversion thread, the link is in my signature.
and do you think a cop is going to look under a magnas hood? NO!
and if he did by some slim chance, do you think he is going to regognise that its a 3.5L or even realise that your model didnt come with a 3.5L.
ive had cops pull me over and inspect my rear tyres for doing burnouts
the other day one thought my car was a skyline, (im assuming) and when i asked y he wanted to speak to me, he replied "a lot of these things are getting stolen"
i thought "what magnas?" but i said oh ok and drove off.
EDIT: oh and just realised, at what gas head just posted. since our car was available with a 3.5L
the verada, the 15% capacity limit, only applies to a capacity over the maximum factory available engine. so thats 15% over 3.5L, which works out to be 4021 cc's.
and to answer your question, yes you need the 3.5L plenum, as it has the EGR fitted. you will also need a 3.5L T/B and the 3.0L injector harness/manifold, as its ECU plug is different.
if you decide to swap ecu over its gets a little complicated, as im not sure if the looms plug in, if they dont, air bags, abs systems may be affected as they share the same loom, thats even if the 3.5L ecu can run without the BEM, as the TE/TF's dont have, oh and you will need 3.5L exhaust manifolds too

the thing is he dosen't own a verada he ownes a magna and if he was in an accident or something his insurance would be void if he didnt have an engineers certificate for the engine that is over 15% more capacity than that of the factory release. if it were a verada he could do it and have no problem but its a magna. trust me i checked this all out with the RTA.

I'll stick with a 3.0L and convert to manual
If I buy a new car which I've considered I lose the LPG...

thats sus, a verada is a magna, just with luxury options, they are both a F series.
if you get a blue slip and update your insurance policy, you would be covered

3.0L upper manifold should be used on the 3.5L on a TF btw.

yeah i dont know mate like i said im just goin off what the RTA told me according to them just the fact that its called a magna not a verada. i tried to tell them that they are both built on the same foundations and the only real difference is the name, baddging and interior but they still said no. but who knows if i had have rung up the next day and spoken to someone else they could have given me tottaly differnt information, they are the RTA after all.

:bowrofl: because when you have an accident, there going to check out your STOCK ENGINE to see if a 3.5L has been put in :bowrofl: Please......they look EXACTLY the same...All you have to say is it's had an engine swap and that's it.

maybe you should just pull your head in
Sorry man, hence why I chaged my post, I read your next post and realised that you were only stating what youd been told by RTA person and probably get a different answer next time you rang...
Pull my head in lol if you know me or what Im like youll know thats not possible. People have learnt to put up with my attitude as will you.

why? if its the EGR the 3.5 exhaust manifold will need to be blocked off, but if you stick a 3.5L TB it should be all good

best answer is to ring the insurence company your with, and either inform them a new engine is in, which you proove by getting a blue slip, and filling an rta form called a info update form or somthing along those lines, and they will print a new rego sticker with your new engine number on it.
or you can cancell your policy and start a new one stating your engine cc's, i think this will be the better option as they cant pin you for extra money by saying your car is modified
