manual conversion
:D
edit- seriously though. i suppose you could check all the electricals are grounded properly, and that the throttle body opens full way when the pedal is at maximum travel.

Have you checked your transmission fluid? Ive heard that it wont shift properly if its low

Are the revs bogging down and engine suffering a loss of power or is the gearbox actually slow to engage?
Does it 'thump' into gear?
Have you tried it in power mode with overdrive off?

Mine (94 TS, 4cyl) does this too (I dunno if it's -2- seconds, but it takes a while) and I presume it was standard.
On the topic of overdrive - I am not an expert but as best I can understand from personal experience, reading and guessing .. overdrive acts kindof like a "4th gear" but rather than a 4th gear its sortof a extra step "hacked on the side" as it were.. so if you are in 3rd and in overdrive .. it has to first drop out of overdrive and then back into 2nd gear to accelerate hard. You can hit the overdrive button to drop it out of overdrive manually which will make this snappier.
Setting power mode helps as well. Overdrive is your biggest difference though.
Would love for someone more knowledgeable to tell me if I'm correct about the above.

overdrive is when the torque converter locks together fully, from what i understand
weve got four speed autos, this acts like a pseudo fifth gear. mainly for fuel economy.
PS whats with the sudden rise of the four cylinder auto 2nd gen?

Ahh.. how interesting.
Interesting links:

howstuffworks has some great animations and explanations of both automatic and manual transmissions and other stuff, gives you a really good basic level insight.

Will I get in trouble for questioning you on that? :)
The "4 speed" could really be the 3sp+od .. I have observed in my driving it seems to be 3+overdrive but I could be wrong .. anyone else know better?

Dunno .. wish I had something better.. I don't, yet. :)

I find I have to wait a couple of seconds after I put mine in gear before I can start accelerating or it will thump and bang and carry on.. even stalled once in front of everyone just after going into drive. need less auto.

I notice that (it thumps) - i've never stalled it though. Makes going into Neutral at the lights to stop the shaking a little inconvenient. :)

haha mines stalled a few time, mainly setting off fast around a corner, wilst its still in first hitting at 5.5 then it just locks up, foot to the floor and nothing then bang off like hell.

Autos are a funny thing....
driven lots of cars over the years and found a few things to note.
A> if in econ or overdrive will take longer to kick back a gear. (Not Much)
B> if fluid level is low it gets worse.
C> If it takes to long you need an auto service including adjusting the bands in the box. (Std service if the mech knows the box) about 150-300 $
D> Most mecks don't adjust the cables for some reason as they will stretch a bit over time. Easy job but time consuming.
If your handy adjust all cables to spec including any rubber grommets involved in the cables that deal with tension in any way. Make sure all slack is taken from accelerator cable and other cables involved.
there should be a kick down switch which you can adjust as well below the throttle pedal?
A bit of tlc on these issues may avoid a trans service so have a go!
As most cars age i believe an inline oil filter wouldn't heart for the tranny between the oil cooler on the radiator and the box. all cars have coolers but there not overly efficient so most people put a new aftermarket one in.

the box is very delicate to trans oil!
only use what Mitsubishi suggest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ask a dealer for the right grade.
