hey guys,
was driving the car home this afternoon with a friend from uni, was NOT thrashing it.
the car started to jerk a bit when accelerating, almost like it was skipping between neutral and drive, or just not getting any power to the wheels. i thought it might have been because it was low on fuel, so i filled up at a servo, and took my mate home. was half way home from his when it really decided to give, at a set of lights i could practically rev it to about 2200ish, and it was barely moving.
pulled over and had the raa come out and tow the car home.
another issue ive had with it, which has been periodic, was when trying to reverse, it felt like it was being slowed down, as if the handbrake was slowly being applied. then sometimes it felt like it would jump into park and the car would lurch to a stop.
the RAA man checked the oil, said it had plenty of oil in it. i couldnt see the colour because it was dark, but he said it was alright.
another thing that happened when i tried to start the car again, was in drive it would rev up to about 2200 - 2500ish, and hold there, not moving. no brakes on. it sounded like there was a hissing noise, and when i took my foot off accel quickly the engine stalled. there was no oil on the ground, so i dont think its leaking.
is anyone here able to hazard a guess as to what the problem might be? also if i do need a new gearbox, anyone know of any good places that sell them? i can do the work myself.
thanks!

What car are we talking about here? Auto: in my 2nd Gen I had the same problem, the reverse jump was slowly increasing, a common problem for the rev out could be the over-drive band which gets battered and wears down. I had mine go and when you had it on the car would just rev out, no acceleration, then later on I had my first gear drive plate give way, would not go anywhere until it clicked onto the 2nd drive plate which was actually stupid but I had to do it for a while, then an auto recondition was needed. So yeah check your not driving with A/T mode or O/D mode on , see if that makes a difference , check the oil yourself in light and look for any metal fragments or brown colour oil (burnt), this problem could also be the TCU (transmission control unit) could be fried or on the way out and affecting gear control , so Id change that first before doing the whole transmission. Do any warning lights come on the dash?
(the fuel relay can go and let you drive for a bit then cut out, and do this a few times in a row until it dies) Hissing or a clicking sound ? outside or inside? Its normal to here a hiss when turning the key for the ignition. A large clicking sound from inside under the glove-box indicates the fuel relay. ISC/ECU could be another symptom of the rev out on start up, whilst this is broad its important to rule out each problem.

car in question is a 94 TS auto. i have tried it with OD and AT mode both on and off. what was also weird was when we were getting it off the towtruck, he put it in neutral, but it didnt want to move. he had to start it to get it to move, and for some reason it reversed fine off the truck.
no warning lights. oil looked fine according to the RAA guy, he had lights on in his car. the hiss is when i have it in drive, accelerate, and hold it flat, which is roughly 2200ish rpm. im not sure what that is, but it definately comes from under the bonnet. if it is in neutral the car revs freely.

Sounds like it's defintiely your transmission.
Mine started to do this shortly before it gave up on me on the freeway.
The nigth before it died, i was on the way home and as i slowly took off from the lights, the revs would go up and the car wouldn't move. Then it slowly started to putter along.
I parked the car for ten minutes (thinking the transmission fluid was overheating) and then managed to get it home.
The next day, on the way to work, the car drove okay while it was cold for the first three kms, then while in overdrive it just died.
So take it to a transmission shop. They should be able to source a second hand 2nd gen auto box for you for cheap.
Sometimes, they might try and talk you into doing a rebuild, but in your case, wouldn't.
I did a rebuild on mine with strengthened parts before I did the GTO DOHC engine conversion (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53932&highlight=GTO+DOHC).
It cost me $3300, but it was guaranteed for five years.
But yeah, you'll be fine with a second hand box.

You spent $3300 on a 2nd gen auto?!?!? man you must of been on some crazy medicine back then :P
Any wreckers should stock 2nd gen autos for about $100 give or take, thing is, they are pretty much all rooted...

yeah
thing is the car cost me 200 bucks, new motor and fitting cost me about 700ish all up... so 900 for the car. panels arent in very good condition, dents and scrapes along left side... paint fade on roof, some interior trim is scuffed up. if its going to be more than half a g then its probably not worth it to me, and it would be worth more splitting it up and selling it for stock or replacement parts for others...

just talked to city dismantlers, will cost $500 for a 'good 2nd hand' gearbox, or $1900 for a reconditioned one.
doh.

I think if you can get a second hand tranny for a few hundred dollars and are able to do the job yourself, it'll be a cheap solution.

I could have replaced it for a few hundred dollars but I had plans for it and I wanted to be one hundred percent sure that the auto wouldn't die on me.

is there a possibility it could just be the torque converter? ive had a quote of $400 to remove and reinstall a gearbox at a workshop...
or how much would i get for a 1994 ts wagon with a little damage to passenger rear door, with a motor thats just been put in, and runs smoothly (besides gearbox)...

V6 you're looking at maybe 1.2-1.4k. 4cyl maybe about $900-1.1k
probably something around that mate. Gearboxes cost alot to replace...

UPDATE!!!
gearbox is not broken. i found out today that when mitsubishi brought out the TS GLX, they put the old gearbox from the tm etc magna, into the carby 4cyl ts. the efi engines get the better gearbox.
what was happening, was the automatic hydraulic clutch was slipping. the clutch needs oil to operate. what happened was the metal sludge from the gearbox had coated the magnets in the bottom of the gearbox sump, and were floating in the oil, getting stopped by the filter. there was enough sludge in there to completely block the filter, and therefore wasnt letting any oil go through to the hydraulic clutch, so it wasnt working. when i first start the car, minimal oil flow, cleanish filter. as soon as its been run for a few minutes, the muck builds up from the sump and blocks filter, basically acting as a clutch on a manual car.
i got quoted $165 for the workshop to lift the car up, take the sump off and filter out, new filter and new oil, as well as a nice ol clean of the bottom of the motor. took about an hour all up, including free test drive.
good guy too, ill be taking the car back there next time. only concern was they didnt use mitsi fluid, i think it was fuch's. should be alright anyway.
