View Full Version : Using Verada dash tweeters in place of Jaycar tweeters

Hey guys, recently I bought some 6.5" splits from Jaycar (the group buy) and they came with separate ribbon tweeters that connect to the crossover with the splits. I was wondering if it's possible to swap these for the verada dash tweeters that fit flush on the top of the dash? Would it be a matter of cutting off the connection on the stock tweeters, adding some extra speaker wire, and connecting them to the crossovers?
Hope someone can help

Why would you buy splits if you didn't want to use the tweeter? I kind of defeats the purpose.
Aside from that, it will probably "work" but if it will sound good? well that's another question. I'd suggest try fitting your jaycar ones in to your veradas tweeter pod, if they dont fit, put them in the 4" hole on the top of your dash - you'll need to remove the ones you already have.

it was just a thought, mainly to keep the stock look. i'd prefer to use the jaycar ones absolutely, only problem is mounting them. the problem is they're like 2" as opposed to the holes which are 4".. could i perhaps cut the little filler pieces that come with the magna (in place of the verada tweeters) so I could mount them there?
also another problem im having is where should i put my amp! its too big to put under the passenger seat, does anyone have any suggestions?

The little 4" holes on top of the dash isnt where the verada tweeters are (The tweeters are located on the door), that is where the 4" drivers go.
You can mount your tweeters there, but the sound quality may be affected as the sound waves will be reflecting off the windscreen. What i did with mine, is mount the tweeters onto the 4" thing, but using the tweeter mounts (That came with the speakers) to angle the tweeters towards the seats.
If you really want an OEM look, you will go to mitsubishi and buy some tweeter pods (Delta pods) to mount your tweeters in.
Cant you mount ur amp in the boot?

i have a magna :D how do i get these holes in my door pillar? would that be a wreckers job? i'd be more comfortable cutting up the little plastic inserts to mount the tweeters
and i have a wagon so its a bit harder :D i guess i could install it right up against the back seats...

The verada pods will replace the rubber ones (That do nothing) on a magna!!

sorry i got confused i meant the 4" drivers, thats what i have. i also have the 4" plastic bits which fill those holes, i was thinking of cutting a 2" diameter hole and mounting the jaycar tweeters in there

"You can mount your tweeters there, but the sound quality may be affected as the sound waves will be reflecting off the windscreen"
but try it, just place your tweeters on top of the 4" caps and see what they sound like before drilling and mounting in the 4"cap!

good call man! well they came with angle mounts so i can angle them away from the windscreen and effectively at the driver and passenger. but yeah ill just put em on top and see what they sound like first! in reality they're not going to be the loudest component, i might put them at -3db to the splits
either way ill test it all first
what would be the best way to fit the tweeters in the 4" caps? just drilling straight through it and (effectively) sitting them on top? or cutting out a 2" circle to put the tweeters into?

Just so you know, the triangular panel ("delta-shape" or "sail shape" at the front corner of front door glass just clips in sideways. Take a small flat screwdriver and you'll very easily lever the plastic triangle off the door.
If you want, Mitsi sell the Verada Tweeter Housings as spare parts - the part numbers are listed in the Parts Thread in these forums. As of a month or so back, Mitsi still had these in stock - cos I bought a pair.... Several members have managed to mount after-market tweeters in these panels, which simply clip into the door exactly as the blank flat plastic panel does. Before you ask, I forget how much they were - the receipt is buried somewhere in the boot of one car or the other, its cold outside and I'm not looking for it. There may be a guide to price in the parts list thread, if you wanna check there. Putting your tweets in these door panels would be the best "stealth" way to go, and may be better sound too.
Other folks in these forums have put tweets into the door card itself, thinking this gives better sound quality - search forums for pics etc if you are interested. This mounting is a bit less "stealth" cos the tweeters are more visible form outside the car and are obviously added-in (and this might suggest to a thief that you've upgraded your gear).
DASH PODS: These can be simply unclipped by using a small flat blade and levering up on the blank circles in your dash. If you were interested, Mitsi Clearance place had 3" mid-range "Infinity" branded drivers which are exact fit in that spot - BUT they do not have capacitor/cross-over mounted on back of the drivers. The Verada drivers for this location seem like lesser-grade speakers, but they DO include capacitors mounted on the speaker cage. (The Infinity sound system fitted to export cars had a six-channel amp where hi-pass filtering was done at the HU or Amp, not by using capacitors at each speaker, or so I have been told). These 3" mid-range speakers that clip into the dash were $11- pair (bit cheaper if you mention AMC to Caine), back in Feb when I drove to Adelaide.

ah cool, i might give mitsi spare parts a ring about the door pods. ive already got the 4" dash pods from the clearance house, bought them off a whim, thought the jaycar ones would be better.
if the door pods arent available ill just mount them in the dash :)
thanks for your help!

and yes DEFINITELY use the Jaycar ribbon tweeters, they are much better than the standard Verada ones.

I got the Jaycar Response Splits this week too.
I had a spare set of Magna sails, but kept my Verada sails.
The tweeter JUST fit! They're not exactly aimed right at your head, but a litte bit more flat mounted behind the sail covers. The aiming difference affects audio very minimally (if really at all) and the sound stage is still lifted very nicely - they are very sweet sounding tweeters i must add!
I think this side option will probablly give better sound than getting reflections off the glass, unless you angle mount but that will sacrfice the stealth/stock look.
Personally, I'm sooo glad they're behind the tweeter pods - I think they're hideous looking tweeters!
But what they lack in looks, they make up for in personality! lol

Yes - the pieces that you were given Part No:s for and an estimate of cost = $33- (Think mine were more like about $50- but parts are exxy here inland and local dealers gouge price, I reckon)
"sails" or "delta" = triangular plastic bit at front lower corner of door glass, with moulded grilles for putting tweeters behind.

Just thought of something...
If you do end up using the 4" mounts upon the dash...
If you get the 4" covers as opposed to the 4" speakers and mount the tweeters in there, you could always buy speaker grille cloth from Jaycar to cover it up with!
ie...
http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=CF2752&keywords=speaker&form=KEYWORD
This will retain the stealthy look...
If you wanna go crazy - You can make your own 4" mounts out of 6-12mm MDF and mount the tweeters recessed, but angle mounted and then cover with the speaker cloth.
This will give you a flush finish, but underneath you have the tweeters that are aimed slighty towards you, rather than straight up at the window.
