hey guys... i know my towball is rated to 750kg (1250kg with trailer brakes)

i was just wondering whats the sketchy-est amount of stuff anyones moved with their 2nd gen? ive never towed with a fwd before... didnt realise the back wheels can come off the ground :(

??? back wheels of the ground? what the! how much weight did u put in the ass end of your trailer?

i tow about 750 kg reg no brakes, and all is fine....as with any trailer you have to balance the weight. If you put a car trailer on the back and drive a heavy vechile onto it "sure the back will raise" until you have it fully on . Never heard of the wheels off the ground?

what weight do you need to move? is the car auto or man.

i've heard people towing 2nd gen and a car trailer and a 2nd genmagna on the back so about 1.6-1.8 ton guesstamate.

went ok but you would have to drive slow and be very gently on throttle and brakes as not to stress the car or cause an accident.

Normally fwd's tow fine but if you have a boat there crap on a boat ramp for traction.

more info please as this sounds interesting?

You can tow a certainly amount (750kg) but you'll note if you still have the sticker on your towball setup it says the max upwards/downwards/torsional force is 100kg. So your trailer will need to sit about right the right height for the towball and if its single axel you gotta balance the weight out better than a dual axel trailer.

sweet i agree!

a tow bar is for towing not up or down load.

haha... i was driving my brumby on to the back of a stock car trailer and the wheels came about 10cm off the ground... not while i was driving or anything... that would be sketchy...

im only asking because i just bought a medium/small box trailer i was gunna convert into a small camper/teardrop/ultra-light to go bush in.... i dont think i need to worry to much about weight just wondering what other peoples opinions are on towing with a maggie

cheers,

Well the car should be okay. If you're towing something heavy I suggest getting some harder, heavy duty springs. If you've got the V6 you should have plenty of power to pull it no worries. Also, make sure your towbar is rated higher than the weight you're looking to pull and always ensure the towball is as tight as it can possibly be. (I've seen these cut clear off at the thread). Remember that if you have a manual you have less towing capacity than an auto, and if it's auto make sure you've got good, clean fluid and possibly upgrade your tranny cooler so as not to boil the fluid.(gotta be towing alot)

Good luck mate.

Hi,
ive got a man v6 and it tows without any problems. Im towing a large converted box trailer now a coffin style double stacker skiff trailer with fold out camper and mini 'workshop'. Taking off takes some getting use to esp. hill starts - would bit more clutch wear  but after a while theres no dramas. I tow it approx 400kms a week at the moment - still doing 10.5 - 13.1 L/100kms. V. Happy with it.

Hey dan,

your trailer sounds like what i want to do... you don't have any pics do you? how much you reckon your whole rig weighs??

Re; Daniel_Watson

You've got a V6 though. It'll tow a fair bit better than the Astron. OP, mate, check the owners manuals etc to see what mitsu reckon the max towing capacity is and go by that. your clutch will wear out alot quicker if you do a heap of towing though so keep that in mind:) I'm planning on buying a small boat soon and fitting a removable towbar to my magna, so i'll be looking into towing capacities soon also.

750kg or 1250kg with trailer brakes...

if you try to tow what a vb commodore is rated to you'll pull the boot off 1/2 an inch each side and be able to see the gap around the back doors.. they had to release a weld-in tow strengthening pack... they fixed it for the vc... if your owners manual told you to jump off the sydney harbour bridge would you?

are the v6 rated any higher?

depends on the towbar as well.. the standard will tow about a 1000 with a downweight on the ball about 90kg. the heavyduty will do about 1500 with 125-150 on the ball

the v6 will have the same towing capacity

The V6 will be better for towing, more torque/power and also better brakes.

never had a problem towing in mine, and I have towed some pretty heavy loads, both dual and single axle.

i will take some pics tonight after work.
the trailer itself doesnt weigh too much because only the coffin section is rigid. The actual fold out camper is a canvas tent that erects ontop of the coffin and has quick release mounts, so not the traditional camper but the main purpose of the trailer is to transport 2 boats.

Im unsure how much the trailer weighs but i have heaps of gear in it and 2 x close to 100kgs for each boat and gear so would be >700kgs.

Ive towed a car trailer with mine as well, and a 1100kg corolla on it, didnt have any dramas. That included the trailer brakes not working...warning to all hiring a trailer, inspect first.
Mine is not lowered and has stock suspension as far as i know

i towed a horsefloat with mine.. and its heavy float probably plus a horse in it... but then i put heavy duty springs in mine. Tows it well,..but does still sag a tad in the back so im glad car aint lowered. As far as i know ive got a hayman reece on my car, previous owners even towed a caravan a couple of times with the car but it is a v6, and tows well.

mines just a factory towpack...

Dan: That sounds sorta the same as i want to do but without the boats! just a box trailer with a h frame with a "roof-tent" mounted on top of that.. with the camp "kitchen" below... with room for a few bikes and a foldout bathroom... probably a couple of batteries and a watertank too.. if i had a solar panel i could stay out the sticks (or even the styx (its a valley in tassie)) for weeks at a time... which sounds like heaven to me... maybe a hard folding annexe for a living area if i get real serious about it...

As far as clutch wera is concerned im sure its only marginal depending on driving style and im my case i wish to be able to back my trailer up my very steep drive but wont unless i really have to as im afraid i might burn out the clutch as its narrow and steep, a fair bit of riding would be needed to achieve this as im not the best at backing....not the worst ether!

i rang exidy clutches and they informed me that they can make a Kevlar plate with a std type clutch set up to take the heat. this forgo the need for a heavy duty on/off type setup.

I think it was around $600 plus. will get one one day!

just an option
