Howdy All,
EDIT: 1994 TS Wagon .. Auto .. 2.6L Astron 4G54
Got a weird one .. today I was driving to see my sister and I put my foot the floor while doing about 50 and the engine wound right out to about 4.5k (at which point I instantly offed the throttle .. didn't see if it was gonna keep winding .. it was very unusual.. took 1-2s to do that almost like the engine was unloaded .. got the impression something was slipping) .. I then heard a bit of a gurgling sound as it came down which I've heard a couple times this week (but without winding the revs out) .. sorta like sucking spit through your teeth (sorry, lol) .. I managed to do it again a minute later same sound - I also noticed this sound a bit when the engine was under load accelerating (but not being overly zealous)
Sound familiar to anyone at all?
Thanks,
Trent

if u mean the gurgling sound it makes when u rev it, then take ur foot straight of the accelerator, and it pops etc.... yeh thats normal. what do you mean it went to 4500 revs when u put ur foot down when u were at 50, was this before or after a gear change?
if its between gears.... not good, time for manual conversion lol before you panic, check your transmission fluid

Nah not exhaust girgling .. i know what you mean about that .. distinct liquidy girgling coming from somewhere between the gear shifter and the front of the car (front-ish area .. very hard to pinpoint though) .. can't move my ear around while moving and seems to be load related but didn't test rev in neutral.
I actually can't recall if it had changed gears yet .. if it happens again I'll have to pay attention to that .. i think it was after but im not 100% on that .. maybe 70%.

check your transmission fluid mate. it must be bright red and not too thick. If it's black and thin like water it needs a change. Good luck mate I hope it's nothing too serious...

OK so I was thinking about this more today and I discovered that this wasn't really too much of a problem with a little experimentation on the way home.
Key 1: the auto will shift down to first, but only if you are doing < ~50K/h .. otherwise it locks it out (whether the transmission kicks down in drive, or you manually select it)
Key 2: I was going down a slight decline.
Thus, the motor shifted back down to first, resulting in much higher revs (4-5k+ @ 50-60) and since I was on a decline there wasn't alot of load on the motor as it spun up to meet the transmission thus giving me the weird feelings!
No idea what the gurgly sound is but a separate issue at worst.
BTW: fluids are fine .. and it was serviced only a month ago anyway... might look at getting an auto service though its at 170ks and I have no idea when it was done (certainly not in the last 4 years or so .. even though the car hasn't actually done many Ks in that time .. no idea what happened before that!)
Thanks for the input!

Could the gurgly sound be indicative of water flowing through the heater core. I found it slightly more noticeable when the water level was a bit lower than norm.
Just an Idea :)

Ooooh hahaha you have possibly a very valid point here. I had the heater on last few days. Thanks!! I bet thats what it is...
When you say water level, you mean in the radiator?

I say that because the radiator level is fine but perhaps there is air in the run to the Heater core that isn't coming out?

Just a note
drove friends reno to adelaide from melbourne (very rare ex race club car) and loved it. On the way back it was getting cold so i put the heater on and ....Holy S*** the temp started going up? and up?
Pulled into a servo and it had F/A water in it? the dick meck who did the service before the trip drained the cooling system and when it was refilled the heater was off so it had no coolant in it! and was;nt filled or bled right.
It did make some weird noise but the car had no insulation and is loud...ex race car lol !

Thats the place, :hmm: the radiator . Mine does it when ever I have not used the heater for some time, although since I fitted a new radiator, I have not heard any sound coming out. Hope it helped you though.
