Thought these would be cool in the Magna :D
how hard would it be? I read it's just a matter of splicing into the existing wiring (for the interior light?) but is it easy enough to do myself? Or should I get an auto electrician to do it?
EDIT:
thought i might ask this here as well instead of making another thread:
rear garnishes, are the wagon ones interchangeable with the sedan ones? not fussed about the keyhole, just wondering if they're a straight swap?

There standard in my car, but I do believe that Madmagna has put some in his car and so has Elwyn.
However if you do get it I believe you'll have to get a new roof lining as the maplight/interior light is at the front and you have a central light.

the main light just plugs in.... just gotta cut apart your roof lineing (make sure its the right way around) and make sure you dont mess up..
and the side lights you have to buy the C pillar cover with the hole in it for the light... and AFAIK the plugs are there waiting for the lights

do you think it would be possible to keep the existing light? would be handy for people in the back seat
or would that be too much load on the wiring etc?

do you mean the main light just plugs into the existing plugs that are currently in my normal interior light? if so i will need a new roof lining...
which pillars are the C pillars?

Nah they are interior lights from a Verada.
2nd gens have them as the centre light and 3rd gens have them up the front of the Verada.
The little lights are c pillar courtesy lights.
They are easy to install, PM Life if you need to he has installed the front one in his Magna (just wire everything up, nice and easy.)

i put these in my car. i didnt buy new c piller covers, i just cut some holes in the right spot (make sure there in the right spot because they need to sit in the space in the c piller). then for the other just cut a hole in the hoodlining and screw it in, you will need the bracket tho. i keeped the stock light in the middle of the roof wich was he same as the 2nd gens and put the the new one (with 2 map and interior lights) in the area between the sun visors.

C = rear
yes?

Just saw this thread, and see I was mentioned in dispatches in first few posts...... yes, I'm guilty of adding the rear (C-pillar) lamps to my TJ Sports and a TJ Exec. My KJ had both the large front lamp and the C-pillar lamps fitted as standard.
The TJ Sports has a small panel of two map lights at front, plus the base-model Centre lamp - I was happy to keep both of these, but wanted the rear courtesy lamps added.
In my case, I bought from Sydney wreckers, two sets of C-pillar panels, including the lamp inserts, and as much loom as I could conveniently remove. As a point of interest, these (ex-Verada wreck) panels also had some sound-deadening felt on the back, whereas the TJ Exec panels I replaced had none (my TJ Sports "may" had had the sound insulation, I forget now).
In one car where I added the rear courtesy lamps, there "seemed" to be a loom for lamp on Rear Pass side, but it had no power, I didn't try to trace it. The other car (probably the TJ Exec, and older car and lower-spec) had no trace of looms for the courtesy lamps.
My install just had to clip out old panels, and clip in the panels/lamps from wreckers. For power, I ran the Pass side across back window (tucking up behind roof lining from the edges) to the Drivers side, then tucked under roof lining towards front of car - I took off the drivers A-pillar trim and spliced into the "constant-12V" and "doors-12V" wires there. That way, the rear courtesy lamps come on when any door is opened, and can be switched manually at the lamp unit for use at any time.
I'd recommend keeping an eye out at Wreckers for the full C-pillar trim and lamps, and get the connecting plugs an bit of the loom whhile you are at it - there's about 20cm you can get on each side which is easy and includes only the wires running to the lamps. I'm sure some members have modded their existing panels by cutting-out a space for the lamps, but its and irregular shape and is best positioned where there is a gap in teh metal panel behind, which accomodates the bulk of the lamp unit. If you are looking at C-pillar trims, remember that the seatbelt also passes through a roughly-oval shaped hole - don't get excited thinking you have a "lamp" panel if there is only one hole - you need a hole for belt plus a second hole for lamps.
I used side-facing SMD LED's in these rear lamps, and am very happy with the result (the LED bulbs look like a small rectangle of circuit-board).
I got bright white LEDs, and only thing was I had to file/grind a small amount of the circuit board stuff to allow the LED to plug into the bulb-holder.
It's a small Mod I'd recommend. As for the front lamps, I'm happy having the big jobbie in the KJ, and also quite happy with the smaller "map-lights-only" lamp at front of TJ Sports. Using 31mm 4-LED festoons in those lamps, as well as boot lamps, and happy with that result. I've also added a second "standard" boot lamp to each of my cars (with LED festoons), as well as a multi-LED self-stick strip (which is awesome - wouldn't have bothered with extra boot lamp if I had the LED strips first).
If the subject of this post was the lamps from NZ, I can understand why panels were not included (postage bulk/cost) but I'd personally recommend trying to get the panels locally. Lancercity in QLD on E-bay seems to get a few Verada wrecks (tho not speedy at answering e-mails). In my case, I went through Sydney Yellow Pages ringing Wreckers when I had a few days off and was down there, tracked bits down that way.

I would say, for those who want to try to tap into this, that it was factory wiring for a rear spoiler brake light. As factory spoiler (& light) equipped cars did not have the high mount version. Lowering the roof lining will give you plenty of relatively easy access to wiring.

Besides cutting holes in your wagon panels to fit where you probably dont need them anyway you could mount them in the boot or under bonnet with LEDs installed.

You could if you wanted to, but it wouldn't be as good as just throwing a large neon or CCFL tube in there.
The reason is the map lights (even with white LED's) are pretty gutless, and the centre main light only uses a festoon bulb, so you can throw a 9 or 12 led bulb in there but it still wont really be material to light up your boot or bonnet.
If I had a wagon I would use the smaller ones for the C panel if you can make them fit, or they might even be suitable for the bottom of your doors

If you just want useful light in the boot - try a sticky-back LED strip (white) from E-bay. Extremely easy to use in boot - solder a power and ground wire to the LED strip, and splice into the normal boot lamp loom. The strips I refer to can be cut every 3 LED's if you want, so bits of strip could be positioned in various spots under parcel shelf panel. These use SMD (surface mounted) LEDs - look like white plastic squares with yellow dots - and light output is pretty awesome in the bright white versions (which is all I've used).
Under the bonnet I am not so sure that the LED strips would be so useful. HOWEVER, got a 3-LED baseball cap at Super-Rice when they had percent-off sale a couple of weeks ago, and THAT seems like it'll be quite useful. Thought it would be a gimmick, but I easily found several small clips etc that had been lost and living on top of my steering rack for who knows how long. Mounting LEDs under bonnet are likely to just dazzle you IMHO.
Those C-pillar lamps might make a nice "feature" lamp in a sedan boot, mounted into the carpet panels above that "alcove" behind tail lamps - the obvious spot for me to put tool bags and hand-cleaner and so on. With the LED strips tho, the boot is lit like a shop window.

Neons or CCFL's in the engine bay will fail. too bulky. if you wanna use LED's in the engine bay use surface mount SMD LED's. When I have a car again i will be putting a strip in.
