View Full Version : TH/J Trip Computer in a TE??

Just wondering if anyone knows whether it's possible to wire a TH/J Trip Computer in my TE exec? I know people are gunna say yes anything's possible with enough money, but what I mean is can I do it without changing the wiring loom behind the dash?
Also if I did want to, does anyone know whether it would be possible for me to change the wiring loom behind the dash from a TE to a TJ loom, as I currently have power window parts with TJ door looms sitting here, but I was thinking of doing my own custom wiring? The thing i'm worried about with doing this is that the TJ loom wouldn't be compatible with other plugs behind the dash such as cruise control, dash cluster etc...

Short answer = No. You need to do a full dash loom change as TE loom doesnt have the required wires.

Yep, I agree with jason (who is better-palced to know stuff than many of us).
I have a plan to add a Centre-Display trip-computer readout into a TJ Series 2 (which has the trip display in the cluster as an LCD panel. I think the larger and higher display above centre-vents is safer and easier to read).
I have bought a centre trip readout panel from a member, and without seeing that, I grabbed a small bit of centre-display loom out of a wreck. the plugs are COMPLETELY different - the non-trip unit has a long narrow weird connector (lets say a "mouth organ" but not really like that - contacts are like clips and in a single long row. The Trip Computer read-out panel has a more conventional-looking connector, nore like you'd see at back of a radio etc, and many more pins.

so what exactly are you asking?

if your handy with wiring then most if not all of the 20 connections for the trip computer wiring can be intercepted from the instrument cluster loom
you will also need the cluster shroud for the buttons and the trip computer plug w/ a decent length of wire
as for the windows...anythings possible with alot of money :)

Might as well sell my TF as obviously it will be far cheaper to BUY A NEW CAR than it is to change a few wires over. Well screw me.
Anyone want a TF? Anyone got a TJ I can spend thousands on to save me the few cents and a few hours to run a few wires
Now seriously, it is not a hard job, I have gone one step futher and have the blackout dash along with the trip computer etc in my TF, all but the usage work at the moment, I only need to run one more wire but as I do not like just poping a random wire in I am patching into the harness properly, this one goes to the ECU for injector pulse.
Not hard really, is a dash out matter.
Yes you can change over the harness under the dash from the TJ but you will then need to change much more as the TJ has a BEM where as the TE/F does not. You are better off re pinning the plugs, is not hard and all the wires are the same colout. I believe the SII TJ has a different shape plug but at the same time the actual wires are all the same.
I would suggest that if you want to run the dash cluster and speed alert you get a sII TJ one, get the wiring etc and set that up. If I can get a SII harness I can mod it so it will plug straight in for you.

i was going to say ask mal because he has done it the clever little sh!7 he is lol. hey mal im interested in the harnes you canmake up for me to run the black out cluster in the missus KF i have the cluster already.
Also interested if you can make a P&P adapter to use a S2 cluster on an S1 car...

Ok, Either way the harness that runs inside the top of the dash needs to be changed.
There are a few critical steps in doing this
For starters, the series 2 harness is very different to the series 1 and earlier. This is not a problem provided you can get the right harness.
The trick is to make the harness fit your car and not try and make your car fit the harness if this makes sence (clear as mud?)
You have 2 options, if you are more intersted in only the dash cluster, you can get around the speed alert part by not using it, just get a clock set up there. If you also want the trip meter etc, then there are 2 more wires to run up from the ECU up to the harness.
I will be finishing mine hopefully on the weekend, this wil allow me to make a template and then from there will start making harnesses for people wanting various combinations such as SII dash with the inbuilt trip meter etc etc.
As I said before, I have done everything but the range part, this is the final bit for me to do, have found where and what to do, is just a matter then of making this into a "kit" form so interstate people can also do this and safely plug them in. Will look at making a harness with the required bits included, who ever gets one will only really need not to be colour blind and be able to solder.

i have started on this conversion too, i looked into doing a loom conversion, but with no BEM this is too much hastle.
so i used the TH loom as a template, and i will use it to modify my current one in the car.
but yeah basically i am repinning the TF plugs, based off the TH loom, not sure how long this process will take, as i dont have any time atm.
the loom is sitting on my bedroom floor atm lol. mabey in a few months.

No offense mate but you are really going the looong way around this
You do not need to touch the main under dash harness, this is the harness that feeds to the cluster, trip comp and then goes to the lighter and ashtray.

ah, i was implying that, im only using the main dash harness, as a template (from my wrecked TH), as i do not know the pin outputs for the ECU and the corrosponding CMD input requirements.
and was going to write down what wire is required where, and wiring in my own loom, direct from the ECU
if that makes sence. still got to work out the fine details, but that was my idea anyway.
but if your making and selling loom kits, i would rather buy one and spend my time, on other aspects of my car that require more immediate attention

any progress on your kit madmagna?
Hey, just resurrecting this thread as I bought a trip computer display and cluster surround from a TH from the wreckers today. I didn't have time to pull out the looms as they were closing so I snipped the plugs (naughty, I know). What do I need to do to make this work in my TF?
Are all the wires there? Is it just a matter of repinning the plugs I snipped with the wires in my dash?

Slim, no all the wires are not there, you need the top dash harness intact and then if you have a TE or F you will need to get it modified a little to make it work if you have cruise control and want that to still work
OK - I'll go back and get the rest of the harness. Is it a dash out job? I do have cruise control, what do I have to modify to make it work?

It is a dash out job.
There are a few wiring mods needed to make the cruise work as your cruise is switched on by the switch on the dash, the TH onwards uses the stalk on the wheel to turn on. Wiring needs to be modified on the new dash loom however if you have cut the plugs you really need to seek an alternate loom

A revival, Madmagna my heater core in my TF advance leaked so dash is out, while its out i sourced a Black series 1 VRX dash and its loom inc the clock spring. i have here a TH trip computer and i want to stick it in while i can.
I could get my hands on the indicator stalk for cruise. but what is this wire mod for getting the cruise to work?

has anyone used a TJ cruise stalk in a TF? or done the TJ upper dash harness conversion in their TF? and got the cruise to work again
