View Full Version : Installing SRS to Standard TF.
In the process of gathering the required materials to install power windows into my car, I've come across a bit of a problem. The only door trims I have avaliable to me are the VRX ones from a 2002 model. The surface on those are black and my dash is grey. So to correct this, I've also bought the VRX dash to match the door trims. Now the problem.. The dash has the perforation for the passenger air bag, but my car doesn't have SRS. Being the OCD person I am, if there's a slot for something, then something has to go in there.
Are there any legal ramnifications of having a SRS labelled pannel there even though it isn't installed? If not then I'll leave it as is. But if so, I'll have to source stock door trims.
The source car that has the SRS was involved in a rear accident and resultantly hasn't set of either of the air bags. But I understand it to be a mammoth of a task to install one. Installing is another option, I'll be looking at the circuit diagrams tonight to determine the ease of this.

I am also in the process of installing power windows to my TF! I was having trouble finding matching door trims for my dash, but was told that it is possible to paint the dash using vinyl paint or something. Maybe just find a good black vinyl paint and paint the dash? I have no idea if it would turn out looking good, but it would be alot cheaper than having to get door trims sent down to tassie!
Nah man I'm really in North-Queensland. I've got to fix up my location.
I've replied to your thread about power windows, it looks like a simple swap from mechanical to electronic. But I won't be able to post details and how it went, my car is at the pannel beaters.. Stupid room-mate. Not keen on painting the vinyl, I don't trust paint. I'm OCD, everythings got to be stock (Except the trims :P)

Check out Madmagnas ride in members rides as I think he has done what you want to do.
Where in NQLD are you?

Not keen on painting the vinyl, I don't trust paint. From what I have been told, in my search for an all black dash (I am in the same boat as you, factory grey interior, got black ruffled door trims and black door cards, now I want to rid my car of the grey interior) all Mitsi did was spray them black anyway. Just source a good vinyl paint, perhaps even be able to find out the product used by the factory, if some kind ex employee here in the know will post.

MMAL didnt paint them (dash and door trims) but they were supplied to them from the manufacturer already painted to match the "version" of the car that they were going in.
When i did a stint in QA at MMAL we had "touch-up" paint to fix up minor scratchs etc on the dash/door trims.... All i know was it was a industrial vinyl paint that we used to thin down and spray on (lightly until damaged area matched its surrounding).

Guys, check out my thread
I can sell a glove box that will fill that space if someone wants one, will need to be painted black
Fitting bags is not a bolt in thing either YOu need to weld brackets onto the cross beam
As I said, check out my thread in members machines, I have done the whole VRX thing
If you have the bag IT MUST BE CONNECTED AND WORKING, same as any safety feature
Remember that some of the black with dark grey bottom dashes did come with no pass bag also

Do you have a pic of the glove box? Is it black? Also you are *********** crazy. Nice work on your car. I'm worried about the vinyl paint being scratched or rubbed off, other wise I'd go crazy with it on the door trims and dash.
I've also had another crazy idea. Using a dremel tool to cut the A/C control bezel from the TF and mounting it in a hole I've cut from a TL console. Have to use a putty and sand paper to level out the surface, and make a new mounting for the controls behind the console. I'll have to check out the angles and see how everything sits before I even attempt it. Or, depending on how the buttons/knobs are mounted to the TL plate, maybe use the buttons/knobs from that with a little (or alot of rewiring) and a multi-meter. Again I'll need all the parts infront of me to make a call. Just theorizing atm.
Progresss.. Dremel tool was only a cheapy, ran at 3.6 volts and was gutless. Used the cutting discs on an air drill and they exploded :(. So I used an angle grinder to cut the holes. I've kept the little clip on the back of the TF pannel so the A/C controls will be able to hold onto it. Will be glueing the pannels together with epoxy or something like that, and then filling in with putty and sanding back to achieve a smooth finish. I'm worried about how it'll mount in. The head unit is angled down and the A/C controls will be angled up slightly. I'll work it out when I come to it.
