driving home from work doing 110 all the way i noticed that it takes around 15-20 kms before the torque locks up.
Is this amount of time normal? what controls the lock up on the TF's
97 TF auto.

It is electronic, I would say that your torque converter may have issues.
Generally they will allow lock up at around 80+ PROVIDED you are not accelerating. IE under cruise you shold have lock up.

Once it locks in, it seems to keep working, ie drop a gear than back up and it still the lower revs for speed.
the road to work 40 non stop - almost eactly the same spot each time it locks in. only noticed when taking a mate with the stereo turned down :)

Don't they also lock up once the trans gets to a ceretain temp?
I do the same drive to work every day in 3 different rada's at midnight, on a fwy. I turn out of my house pretty much straight onto the fwy and they all take about 5 mins for the converter to lock up.
It is amazing that they all do it within 50 odd meters of eachother on this fwy.
But it wouldnt be 20odd k's. Maybe 5k's of fwy stretch from cold.

yeah mine takes a whaile i ve noticed, doing some cold freeway runs..... hmmmm
Yes over the years I've had a few 2nd gen and 3rd gen autos.
They always took about 8km before they used to lock up.
For examples, a 2450rpm cruise at 100km/h would become more like 2200rpm when locked up.

my wifes tj series 2 is the same. The trans fluid must be at a certain temp before the lock up clutch will work. Not sure what the temp is supposed to be though. I am curious to find out if any one knows.

1900 rpm on my TL @ 100kmh (standard tyres/rims). But according to my GPS, my speedo is out by about 8kph (doing 92kph in reality)...so closer to ~2000rpm @ 100kph.
