Was getting my daughter's TE ready for a roadworthy and had to replace the headlining that was falling down.
Budget was a bit tight, so I thought I'd have a go...
Went to Clark rubber and bought to see if they had foam backed fabric. None. Ended up buying 2 metres of boot liner. Is black with white/grey speckles through it and a can of spray contact adhesive.
Took the headliner out, took me about 1/2 hour and stripped the old foam off, just use a rag/gloved hand and get it clean.
Laid out the new liner and folded it back halfway and sprayed the glue on both board and fabric, stuck it down and worked it into the contours. When that was OK, I did the same to the other half.
Got some sharp scissors and cut the edges to size and cut out the holes. Don't forget the front and rear ends fold over the edge and around the other side.
Job done, I put it back in. Again not a difficult task. Just remember to handle the plastic trims gently.
My daughter loves it, reckons it looks better than the original.
Total cost - $55. Job took about 2-3 hours.
I wouldn't use fabric unless it has a foam backing to make it a little stiff, straight fabric would be too hard to glue down without wrinkling.
I've never done anything like this before, and I reckon it was dead easy.

I just did mine.

Get proper headlining material from an auto trimmer. I also used a tin of Selleys Kwik Grip adhesive ($20 tin from bunnings).

depends, if it has just become unstuck you should be able to reglue it carefully but if the foam is perished just get some foam backed velour from a motor trimmer and glue that to the board with contact adhesive.

got black.. sitting in the rear seat of my car waiting to be stuck to the roof lining.. which has been sitting in my front room for about a week now :P

if your going to retrim the roof lining (or any other item of interior), and dont have access to spraying rquipment, either use brush on kwik grip, or spray on 3M ashesive. i wouldnt recommend any other product (while there might be other items on the market just as good, these 2 come highly recommended).

When I told them what I was doing, they sold me a can of spray on contact adhesive. Not cheap at $20, but easy to apply evenly. Used the whole can, so don't go too crazy putting it on thick.
As to how long it will last, only time will tell.
I couldn't find any foam backed velour on a Sunday... Anyway my daughter is rapt with the result.

I had my Ford done a few years ago. They used a urethane type glue. Car stank evilly for several days. It may be the right adhesive to use on foam. The heat a roof faces during the day may be an important consideraion here.

My dad did his own in his vr commodore. Cut a slit along the edge and then sprayed the adhesive up into it through the cut and just pressed it up against the roof. Hilarious to watch. Ended up looking great to be honest.
