Hello guys.
Got a few questions bout the magna I just bought. Its my second magna. Nov 97, manual 3.0L exec.
1. I want to get it lowered (I recently put 18 inch wheels on it as it came with boring 17s. pics here (http://images.google.com.au/images?hl=en&q=speedy+obsession&gbv=2&aq=f&oq=) and in my profile too. Can I just take it to any random suspension place like JAX or pedders to get it done or should I go to a custom shop? Do I remove the mudguards when I get it lowered?
EDIT: Just some extra info + question. The shocks on there at the moment are really hard, so I assume I can just leave them and replace the springs only? I don't know whats involved with changing springs. Should I get it done professionally?
2. How much am I looking at for a new headliner? Mines disgusting.
3. If i want to replace the steering wheel, how easy is it? Any guides online cos I cant find any?
4. My dad offered to give me some money to help me get it gassed. I get ~620klms for 52 litres. Thats enough right?
5. Any particular exhaust you recommend (i live in wollongong)? I want it really deep but not too loud when I'm driving around town at 40klms and between lights. Its got the stock exhaust at the moment. I went for a look at the local muffler place and they got all the usual generic cannons and twin tip. All I really care about is that its deep and crackly. I'm willing to spend a bit of cash here but not overboard. Just the back pipe if I can help it.
6. Whats a good gear cloth? Are they easy to install? Should i just go to repco and get that generic 35 dollar black one?
7. Whats the popular problems with it? Are the 97's electrically sound, prone to burning oil quickly, etc.
8. When I go over speed bumps quickly, my boot opens. What the hell is with that?
9. Debadging? Yay or nay?
10. I've got a sub box wit 2 x clarion 12" in it and a clarion amp (both in the same box), and in a separate box, I've got a single pioneer 12" sub and a kenwood amp. Should I put all 3 of them in the car? Will i need a more powerful battery for 3 subs or is the normal one fine.
Thanks in advance. I was a member here a few years ago and you all seemed to know your stuff.

Welcome back, in regards to the exhaust I run a 2+half" catback system with a magna flow muffler. Its very quiet when cruising but has a really deep growl when you put the boot into it.
Also depending how low you go on the suspension you may need to remove the mud guards as they measure from these as they will be the lowest point of the car, if you go ridiculously low you may have to remove some of your front inner guards (the plastic bit) to avoid the tyres scraping at full lock of the steering wheel.
Well happy browsing and remember the search button is your friend :D

Thankyou. Will look into this.

I don't have any idea how to put it in. Do I just get adhesive glue and spray it on and just hold it up there?
Steering wheel,,,,,, well if you want after market get a boss kit and sweet....do you have air bag? if so only factory wheels will fit legal. I got no air bags. Do boss kits come with instructions? I have no exp in wiring, cept audio. Is Boss a brand or a type?

Yes, I wasn't asking about how it worked. I was asking if it was really worth it in a car with very good fuel efficiency already.

g'day,
i have a 97 and i dont have many problems, just had an issue with the exhaust but thats cause my car went airborn and bent a guard and damaged the pipe.
get a 2 1/2" flow through system for exhaust, sounds mean when you boot it. mr muffler did a great job with me, dont underestimate them.
i think mine burns abit of oil *not sure* but i havn't had a diff fall out or engine mounts snap like a commodore so its okay lol. just get a good service on it, and check your oil/power steering/transmission fluid every week/2 weeks

Thanks. Lol @ airborn. Flow through systems are the ones with the pipes all the way from the front right? Theres a mr muffler down the street for me. Are there generic ones that fit all cars or am I up for a grand or so to have them bend it to suit a magna.

roof lining clips in and is a big job as you need to remove most side trims. from your response I'd say get someone else to do it.
your car should have at least a driver air bag but if not just pull it off and get a BOSS kit to suit your new after market wheel
Boss kit is not a brand name.....its the name of the part you need. to suit an aftermarket wheel.
As far as LPG goes its up to you. will be harder on the motor ..eg wear quicker only a bit if done right and save heaps in fuel. if you do low k's don't bother
but if above 25-40 thousand per year may be an option.
CitroClean is from Safeway and most places....its good light degrease with out stuffing the paint. im sure there are better on the market but this works great without stuffing the paint. Used it myself and then put a bit of polish over the top. 2 years and its fine.

You should look to do your dampers with your springs, the rates will be closer. Avoid Pedders if you can as they are rubbish, they will sag like a pair of old boobs. Kings with KYB or Monroe GT Gas are your best starting options and can upgrade from there
2. How much am I looking at for a new headliner? Mines disgusting.
Go to a trimmer, about 180 would usually cover it for a wagon
3. If i want to replace the steering wheel, how easy is it? Any guides online cos I cant find any?
No bags, you have a few more options but the Verada Leather wheel is a good one, all your hardware will screw straight on
4. My dad offered to give me some money to help me get it gassed. I get ~620klms for 52 litres. Thats enough right?
That is actually damn good for a third gen, you can get Gas but as many know I hate the stuff, is messy in your engine bay and takes up a lot of room in the back
5. Any particular exhaust you recommend (i live in wollongong)? I want it really deep but not too loud when I'm driving around town at 40klms and between lights. Try a Magnaflow, cannons are not really mufflers as such
6. Whats a good gear cloth? Are they easy to install? Should i just go to repco and get that generic 35 dollar black one?
Gear Cloth??? you mean gear shift boot as in on a manual, 20 bucks brand new from mits
7. Whats the popular problems with it? Are the 97's electrically sound, prone to burning oil quickly, etc.
No real issues aside from the standard servicing required
8. When I go over speed bumps quickly, my boot opens. What the hell is with that?
Adjust your boot latch
9. Debadging? Yay or nay?
Why bother, unless you need to paint, leave them on the effort needed is really not worth it all

1. Look at KYB they seem like a popular choice amongst many members here as an affordable upgrade from stock.
2. Under $200 should cover headliner, I would pay to get it done not a fun job to do on your own.
3. I replaced my steering wheel with a RalliArt one. Plenty seem to pop up on Ebay, average price is $100-$120 looks the good and fits the stock unit, no modifactions, airbag or no airbag.
4.Gas is a personal choice, as you said you do alot of Km's then it may not be a bad idea.
5.A good replacement for the stock muffler is a Lukey AL4-5597 ordered through Supercheap for around $200 delivered. Bolt straight on to rear flange, just need a new rear flange gasket $3 and some new nuts. Only a 15min job and sounds a great deal better than stock. (There are some vids on youtube form members on the site with this muffler.)
6. Just get a replacement one from Mitsubishi.
7.I have a 99 and have had no problems. Just keep up regular services.
8. As already said boot latch?
9. I didn't bother doesn't really achieve much for my mind.
10. 3 subs in 2 boxs will look terrible. maybe go with just the dual set up.

Also 4inch diameter. Damn.
$300 for muffler and $200 for 2+half" pipe with installation.
4" diameter is not as bad as it sounds as its double walled, which the inner wall diameter is only 2.5". Match this tip with a VRX rear bar and it makes you want to make love with it :ninja:
I totally agree with Madmagna as he is a very knowledgeable source also pedders is what I have in mine so I know he is spot on.

Wow thanks for the long reply.
1. Okay. Pedders is out. If i go to JAX and just say 'get me some lowered Kings springs and chuck em on' they'll do the rest right? Can anyone give me a ball park price.
2. Okay, I'll do that. I more wanted confirmation that that was the right thing to do.
3. Wow good idea. I didn't even think of that.
EDIT: I can't really find a good pic of one. Know where I can see one?
4. I'm leaning towards not getting it tbh. So far not many people have backed it hugely on here :p specially you.

I can't stand the look of those exhausts to be honest. I heard a few on youtube and it sounds okay, reasonably deep i guess.
EDIT: Tell me honestly. does it have that nice crackle as you change down from 3rd to 2nd? If it does, then I don't really care about how it looks, i'll get it. I'd prefer it sound nice. I did a search on here (OMG, a new guy actually used the search function!) and it seems quite popular. In half an hour, I've already almost changed my mind on it.

what you want is a fully done mag!
you have no ideal how to do it from your post and thats fine as were here to help.
if you have a clean car your looking at about 2-4 grand to get it were you want.
if you can narrow down what you want or need we can help more!
best of luck!?

no i doubt it would ever be that much.
for me it was $188 to get my resonator cut out and piped and a new muffler put on.
i rekon for a whole new one it wouldbe a couple of hundred, cant see it being more than $300-$400. someone who has just had their's done might have some info, if not just ring em and go in, get a free look at it and they will give you a quote. if not, still get hte free inspection cause you can see the bottom of your car for leaks, as i dont have a jack it was a very very quick inspection on my behalf whilst he did the exhaust haha!

Springs are around the $250 mark plus installation. The cheapest I've seen is $400 including installation. As suggested, consider getting new shocks at the same time, as it'll save you doubling up on labour costs. New shock will improve your ride and handling, plus given the age of your car, there's a fair chance they'll be up for replacement anyway.
3. If i want to replace the steering wheel, how easy is it? Any guides online cos I cant find any?
It's not too hard. Search for 'Ralliart wheel install' (or some variant) and you should find something. I can recall a guide being written last year when the Ralliart wheel group buy took place.
5. All I really care about is that its deep and crackly. I'm willing to spend a bit of cash here but not overboard. Just the back pipe if I can help it.
Out of the exhausts I've heard on this forum, Magnaflows would be my pick - at least that's what I'd like to get when I upgrade mine.
9. Debadging? Yay or nay?
Your call. I'm not always a fan of the 'naked' look, some badges (like the side '3.5' badges) are plain redundant imo.
It's bloody easy to do. Heat up the badges with a hairdryer and then run fishing line behind the badge to separate it. Then use some sort of cleaner (I used some 'Orange Power' brand goo remover, available from supermarkets) to remove the gunk left behind. A quick polish over and you're done.
Another option to consider is rebadging it. IMO the TJ badges (like in bean's pic) are the best looking Magna badges.
I personally wouldn't mix and match subs and amps.
Stock battery should be fine. If you do go ahead, just make sure you have a pretty beefy power wire running to your boot. 4 gauge split into 8 gauge into each amp would be the minimum IMO. It's what I have in my setup and it works, but if I had my time again I would have ran 0 or 2 gauge to the distribution block just to be safe.

Thanks for the reply Red. The ride in my magna is VERY firm at the moment. Like I can press down on the boot as hard as I can and it barely even moves down. Does this mean the shocks are just really old or are they new ones fitted that are sposed to be hard?
Also can you go into more detail about the magnaflow exhaust. When i go to their website the only 97 models it lists is the eclipse. The net doesn't seem to have any info on these. Can you confirm its deep and crackly?
Thanks for the wire specs.
Still having trouble finding steering wheel guide, but if worse comes to worse and i hose up the wiring, I can take it down to the local auto electrician and he'll put it on for 20 bucks rite?

Things I've fixed/done so far:
New rear view mirror.
New door seals and new front windscreen seals
New boot floor from wreckers (10 bucks)
New rims and rubber
Gear knob, but the cloth still needs to be done. Its a mess.
Okay, so this is the order I'm going to do things based on what I've heard so far:
1. New air filter (sitting at repco waiting for me to pick it up. nothing to do with this thread).
2. Exhaust. Still tossing up between the Lukey (which is slowly growing on me) or a magnaflow which has been suggested multiple times. I've yet to see pics of this :p
EDIT: Just got pics. Definitely not obnoxious.
3. Suspension and shocks. I've decided to do shocks at the same time, as has been said before to save on labour.
4. Steering wheel.
5. Headliner.
6. Sound system. No explanation needed really.
Sounds sensible right?

Confirm?....Yes its deep, but dont know what you mean by crackly? Like a rotary??
Anyway here's the place where I had mine installed (http://www.dandyexhausts.com.au/index.asp) so give them a buzz for part numbers or more info, also if you do decide to fit a magnaflow muffler get a resonator fitted just after the cat to stop the drone from its deep growl
EDIT: Cancel the resonator as drone is only more noticeable in an auto.

My mechanic installed the ralliart wheel the same time he did the lowering, mainly cause it has a airbag and I didn't wanna stuff it up. Should be a lot easier on a non airbag car, just undo the big nut, unscrew the cruise wire, put stalk on new wheel and reverse (in a nutshell).
The leather was from a another TJ and I put the interior in myself, full leather interiors pop up on ebay from time to time, just keep an eye out. And buying sight unseen wasn't a big deal, $6500 for an MY02 advance in 07 was a good deal haha.

Ah good. Someone who has one! I'm too far away to go there to get it done but I can call for model numbers. Can you get pics for me of what it looks like on your car? At this stage, its either this or the lukey.
EDIT: And i mean crackly as in when you change down from 3rd to 2nd it has that deep burble and literally a small crackle (often happens on forrester GT's when they change down).

Wow, thats a VERY good deal. Very happy for ya mate.
Okay okay, I'll just install the steering wheel and let everyone know how it goes. If I **** it up, you can all have a good laugh :p

Awesome. Everyone is as helpful as I remember. And I've hardly been hit with 'use the search engine ya noob' which is great. I'm a bit more confident bout this now. The steering wheel mine came with twists around and its a bit flimsy. I'm not doing it cos 'LOL RED CUSTOM PARTS. VROOM'

Kool, thanks for taking those. I really prefer a single tip compared to the lukey twin tip. I've got bout a week to decide (I get paid then).
I'm worried bout availability though. The muffler guys around here aren't the brightest bunch. I went in and had an xforce model number in mind to see if they could order it in and he said he'd never even heard of xforce :S what a fruitloop.

Ohh....**** yer like rice bubbles and milk :P
Yer does have that 'crackle' but more like a V8, but havent really looked into whether the 3.5L has a different note to the 3.0L. Anyway couple of McCormick lids should fix things up :ninja:

Lol awesome. Thats what i wanted to hear.
EDIT: Okay guys. Unless anyone has anything to add, I'll let this thread die until I get a few things installed. I'll let yas know how I go. Thanks again for all the opinions and pics and for not slamming me with 'use search button'. Feel free to PM me if you have anything to add but don't want to bump the thread. Cheers.

I like your rims. Very classy looking.
Also can you go into more detail about the magnaflow exhaust. When i go to their website the only 97 models it lists is the eclipse. The net doesn't seem to have any info on these. Can you confirm its deep and crackly?
I don't know much about exhausts, but I was under the assumption that a lot of the Magnaflow mufflers were a universal fit - you just needed to weld up flanges/pipes etc to suit your particular car. Hopefully someone can correct me there.
If you want to hear a few exhausts, jump on YouTube and type in something like Magna Exhaust (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=magna+exhaust&aq=f). A lot of the clips there are from AMC members, so you could post back here with questions if you found one you liked.
Still having trouble finding steering wheel guide, but if worse comes to worse and i hose up the wiring, I can take it down to the local auto electrician and he'll put it on for 20 bucks rite?
I did mine in about half a hour (once I found the required tools), and I am not exaggerating when I say I'm useless at things mechanically. They'd probably do it for cash-in-hand or for a carton of something.

I just wanted to comment as you seem confused as to what the Lukey looks like. This a picture to compare with the stock unit. As you can see its alot smaller and cant really be seen as it sits up higher. Its also a single tip and you can then have any tip attached you like. The good thing is its well priced and theres no need to pay someone else to install. It wont crackle as such, but if you drop it back a gear at higher revs it gives off a deepish note.

roof lining clips in and is a big job as you need to remove most side trims. from your response I'd say get someone else to do it.
your car should have at least a driver air bag but if not just pull it off and get a BOSS kit to suit your new after market wheel
You will find LPG actually reduces wear and tear of an an engine due to the fact is doesnt dilute the oil or "wash" it from the cylinder walls etc,and it also greatly reduces carbon build up aswell,if you go LPG,power wise,Injection is the best, but also the most costly

Okay, so I'm all done aside from my exhaust.
Got the new springs and shocks, got 3 subs in the boot, new headunit, new speakers. Looks great.
I just rang supercheap auto about the lukey exhaust (yes, I've decided to take your advice guys), and apart from being a huge douchebag, the guy on the phone said it was 225, and I had to leave a deposit too (something repco doesnt do, cos they ain't jerks). Is that an okay price?

Okay, ordered it anyway. Went in and told em the guy quoted me 213 so thats all I had to pay, yeah, I know thats a jerk thing to do but I'm sure the cost price is ~150 anyway. Should be in the next few days so my magna will be finally finished.
I bought a camera too (nikon d40 if anyones interested) so I'll have some happy snaps. I might get a custom number plate if I get totally bored and have some money to waste.
Haha, sounds like a fair way for some discount....i've got a D40 too! great little camera, probably more than i'll ever need.

Okay, Got the lukey muffler. Sitting in my car. So I just have to choose a nice tip. I thought it might have come with one but for 200 bucks I guess thats wishful thinking. I had to give my gran some money for bills :( so I wont b getting it installed till next pay packet.. sigh.
And yeah, my gf has a d60 and its great so I should be happy with the d40. 660 from joyce maine. Down from 900 or so.
