Considering the resurrection of the Magna. TN elite auto EFI.

Simply, I want to know how well they tow and if they can handle a caravan, 17' or thereabouts?

I've tried searching and haven't found answers.

Go by weight

Try talking to a tow bar specialist.

Most medium cars can tow fine....but it depends on the weight. If under 1 ton OK, you may need trailer brakes, but where and how steep are you towing is a very important factor.

Mm. I see. about 1600kg I think, with electric brakes, and cable too of course.

As for the motor that doesn't bother me as it's just a matter of what gear for grades. It's the transmission and relative mass of the vehicle that unsettles me a little.

Oh and tandem axle. With swaybars (or whatever you want to call them), tongue weight should be kept fairly minimal. it's everything else that worries me.

My ts wagon v6 is rater for 1200kg with a braked trailer.

I dont think your tn would be any more. If in a pinch im sure it could tow that much but i'd be wary of the reliability of the drive train and it would most likely be illegal. I'd also be concerned about the safety of the vehicle as the van is heavier and may cause unintended road holding behavior.

I'd talk to vic roads and maybe a caravan club.

auto construction
Internally the auto is not as well designed as the later TP box
the 4 speed on the TN can do well towing but does better if 2nd is selected when starting off or going up hills
then when up to speed go to drive then at highway select o/d

when towing the TN auto box needs an oil cooler

the towing weight is governed by the tow bar and ball limitations
- tag should be on the towbar with a number

the book says towing capacity
caravan
500 kg without brakes
1200 kg with brakes

trailer only- 60 kg


own personal experience towing with a TN
a car trailer and a TP sedan on the back
towed over hills slow but steady no slippage

my tj in the book 2ooo model is rated for 750kgs its funny since its got a 3000kg tow ball
i know there are two types a heavy duty and normal mine normal i tow a camp trailer about 1200 not a problem
