Hi all,

I noticed tonight a creaking coming from under the car, sounding almost like metal on metal. Only occurs when hitting a speed bump or rise/dip in the road at moderate pace. Not while cornering, which makes me think it isn't sway bar bushings. Not tires scrubbing...no evidence of uneven or patchy wear.

Anybody got any ideas on what to look out for? Could a worn strut sound like that? I'll be jacking the car up on Wednesday for a look but wanted to pick your brains before then.

Cheers.

Im fairly certain that in some cases the some swaybars do make contact with the chassis/exhaust when the suspension is under compression.

I have a similar sound I'm suspecting it is the swaybar, as is very evident when in rough roads. Keep us posted!!

My shock absorbers used to squeak/creak when they were on their way out.

Trial and error checking.
Pick one possible source - like sway bar bushes, give them a squirt of an aerosol lubricant like silicone spray, then drive the car to see if there is a change.

I had this problem on a high km second gen. Injected some gearbox oil through the rubber boots of the ball joints, and the noise went away.
Not saying it would work for you though.

Hi Andrew, I have TL AWD and had the same creaking noise over speed bump, sometimes under braking and start from stand still, change of steering direction as well. After checking all suspension parts my mechanic decided to check all bolts crossmember to chassis and all major mounting points to chassis, bolts ended up were loose when tightned with a 3/4 rattle gun. Noises stopped altogether. Well worth a look.
