Hi all,

I doubt I can do anything to fix this but I'll give it a go.

The right hand side torque screw that's supporting the drivers airbag has shredded and won't un-screw. Just wondereing if anyone has any ideas of how I can get the airbag out? I think I'm going to have to take it to a mits workshop.

Any suggestions would be great,

Thanks
Mathew

Sometimes you can get a small flat blade screwdriver to get enough bite to unscrew em. :)

Did you shred it or does it just feel like it's shredded from the first go you had at it?

It's a Torx screw, otherwise it's spelt torque. It's not the easiest of screws to line up.

It didn't look right before I started, it wasn't as defined as the otherside, but I think I have caused all the damage. Is it simple enough to replace or will I have to order one through a mits dealer? (assuming I can get it out myself)

Go wreckers and Get one. I wouldn't bother showing them either.

usin a hacksaw cut a line through the top of the screw head and use a straight blade to try and undo it

Or file down the edges and turn it out with some pliers. Or if you're patient, file it down and get a socket on it.

You have some choices here

But before I start, it is a torx 30 you need, a good quality one as well to undo them and replace them

You have the back cover on the steering wheel, once all apart these are available no worries and are the same for airbag and non airbag steering wheels.

You can carefully cut away the back cover of the steering wheel to gain access and then determine if this is caused by the head of the screw being stripped (most likely) or if this is caused by the thread being stripped (unlikely)

Once there, you can either drill out the head carefully or you can as above cut a slot into the head. If the thread is stripped, you may be able to grip the head with some good vice grips and while pulling on the head of the screw turn it as well to remove it. If the thread is stripped you will need a new airbag unit as the thread is not repairable.

TJ sports idea is the most practical. The torx screw threaded section is 6mm outside diameter so try a 7mm drill bit and drill carefully. Cheers

It can work but if you drill in too far you are screwed as the bag will be damaged. Also if the drill is not 100% on track all you acheive is a mess

probably not enough room and not the best way of doing it on the steering wheel but u can remove them with a hammer and centre punch using the centre punch hit the head on an angle to start rotating the torx bit

Just a heads-up - when you get the damaged torx screw out, make sure you get a proper replacement...... these two Torx screws are used to hold in what is basically an explosive device - the AIRBAG.
