im am thinking a bout making a custom parcel shelf for my te magna
with the 6x9's raised up and pointing at a more forward angle
http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showthread.php?t=113099

very similar to this

what do you tink

Ers

Wouldnt do it in a Magna....

There's several reasons:

1: space - the Magna parcel shelf and rear windscreen is very narrow. If you manage to fit angled speakers somehow, you will have no visibility.

2. sound - sound is technically not meant to be fired at the back of your head......

3. complex - Take off the Magna parcel shelf cover, and its a very hard shape to do anything with.....

TUFFTR had a similar thing in his car, I'll see if I can find a pic, but he might be the guy to ask.

Only photo I could find is this one with Lucifer posing in front lol

i have already worked every thing out

it wont be anywhere near the angle thos are on that would just be rediculous
i am only goin to have them on a very slight angle

my speakers i am using are pioneer ts-a6982s 6x9's
wich are very shallow compared to alot of other speakers
i am utilising evry inch of the shelf and with the position of where the speakers will be the mojority of them will be sunk down into the holes in the parcel shelf
it will be tricky but my dad is goin to e helping me and he has lots of exepireince with fibre glassing

Ers

In that case see if you can make an angled 6*9 mount out of MDF, then all you need to FG is the grill?

whiffin
20-05-2009, 10:26 AM
yeh thats pretty similar to what im goin for but with the speakers only on a slight angle

whiffin
20-05-2009, 10:28 AM
yeh i was going to just make it so it fits over the factory shelf cover and just screws into it then just retrim the whole cover showing no evidnce of it being 3 separate pieces

Remove 6x9s and run with fronts + sub.

I think your idea is a good one, but seeing that Calais pic plus the "hill" you have in parcel shelf for high stop-lamp, I'd be tempted to re-trim in green, adding tiny plastic sheep and cows. I'm not trying to be insulting, just grew up in country and have occasional bouts of whimsy.

Guess the "green hills and cows" wouldn't do much for 'street cred' at Summernuts, or down at Macca's!!

Keep us posted with progress. make a cheap fibreglass boot lid liner for practice, if you like!!!

whiffin

not a bad idea that boot lid
yeh should hopefully start it in a few weeks

That sub thing is TE/KE only. I'd try it but I don't like the look of it without being covered. Could just have the sub under the carpet I guess.

not hi-jacking the thread by any means but i was initially going for 2 10" subs in the rear parcel shelf since no way i can fit 2 hcca orions in the boot with a gas tank...BUT after reading about how useless 'free-air' subs are and how the boot would have to be sealed off very well i figured it wasnt worth it...but NOW tufftr says it sounds aiite?? yyyarrrrggghhh!!

I was talking about the 6x9's in the shelf. if you have 2 10"s in the shelf you need to buy subs that are MADE to play in a "freeair" environment. also....your mounting them on like 2mm metal.....your going to need a ton of re-inforcement to stop it bouncing around

i like the look of TUFFTR's but if you could pull off the look in that photoshop you did it would be sweet.

maybe im a party pooper, but im going for parcel shelf speaker delete... flat, trimmed parcel shelf. Once i figure out exaclty how hahah i hope to have a set of 6" splits in each door off 2 small amps. ALso pooping by not wanting an amp... am i weird?

Show us more parcel shelves guys, might inspire me to compete.

What? I made it myself from scratch with over $200 of materials and over 20 hours of labour. Thinking back on it now, I would of gone about it a different way and not of painted it :P

that shelf is now In LIAM's car. I'm still not sure what I wanna do with my parcel shelf. TBH car audio is the last thing on my mind with the car

yours will be alot easier to do than mine

i can only realy make mine to fit onto the trim that sits over the metal shelf
so i need to make 2 boxes that cover the old factory speaker holes then join em to the trim then cover em so it looks like one piece

yours you could pretty much just cover the holes and retrim over he top

Muzzi
21-05-2009, 09:50 PM
oh...tufftr your right bout the subs then..i assume over time ill just fracture the shelf...ive amped the 6x9's ive got currently anyway. I just might stick with them then.

My old car had the 2 hcca's and 2 orion 2500 or 5000 rms amps..cant remmber now...your right..they are paper cone but i swear iam pushed them stupidly hard...i regret now not taking a picture of their excursions! was amazingly long! but then again i never really had the system long enough to see if i ripped the speakers! lol

aye! sure is...i think it messes with the whole stabilty and strength of the structure! anyone who knos exactly why please feel free to correct me. I DO know for a fact your insurance goes kaput if you do that! I assumed the whole fibreglassing was just over the top of the shelf....

Yuha, certainly illegal to cut the metal part of a parcel shelf.

However, there are a few early 3rd gens that have a removal plate that is about the diameter of a 10" speaker/sub.

Lugo

Nope. All the 3rd gens had the mould, but only the TE/KE had the bolt in plate you could remove to use that space.

Those spacers look like a "good get" - are they just plastic sitting on your MDF underneath, or what? (EDIT: Is the MDF unpainted part of what you got, or what came from the shop). Mysterious artwork also noted.

Gonna watch progress with interest on this one....

there a mdf base with fibre glass for the rest then coverd in that same bumpy lookin stuff that most new dash's are made out of

the artwork is a half sleve carp tatt design and a tribal heart design im workin on and some crappy chinese writing

(edit: they are exactly how they came they are made by DNA designer car audio in melbourne and cost me bout $8o wich is cheaper than i would of paid if i had to make em my self)

went shoppin today
got some expanding foam for filling the gaps around the pods
and some dark black grey couloured material to do my door trims and the shelf with
it looks like its ment for doin like rugs and stuff but will work well and it has white backing stuf on it wich will help with glueing it on to the shelf

Ers
10-06-2009, 03:57 PM
Giving you a heads up....

You need to wear a gas mask when using expanding foam, it realeses some extremely toxic gasses.

Wear gloves, if it sticks to your skin, the only way to get it off is to take the skin off.

Once sanded, the foam seems to not have any adverse reactions with contact adhesive - not sure on other glues.
